Hyenas William found hyena bones, including these jaws, in Kirkdale Cave in Yorkshire. Mary drew them for an article he wrote about them.

Hyenas The Buckland family not only dug up and illustrated Ice Age hyenas. They actually kept one as a pet, along with other strange animals.

Mammoths William used this picture in his lectures to show people how big some extinct mammoths had been.

Red Lady of Paviland William found a person's skeleton in Goat's Hole Cave, Paviland, Wales. William thought it was a woman, but it was later discovered to be a man. A mammoth skull was nearby.

Giant deer They also found giant deer antlers and bones in Kirkdale Cave. Here is one next to a modern fallow deer to show how big it was.

Ice Age At first William thought that these animals were ones that had been wiped out in Noah's Flood, a story from the Bible. Later, he realised that they had been animals living in the Ice Age.
