Genealogy Week 1 – Before the Internet or How did our ancestors do their genealogy searching The internet is a pretty comprehensive place to find things these days. Be warned NOT EVERYTHING IS ACCURATE! Prove EVERYTHING for yourself

Sources The most important thing Have source file as complete as possible. Without knowing where you have been, you will waste valuable time redoing what was already done. The only way to prove your information is correct is to document it. Make sure you have the name of the book, author, copyright date, publisher, ISBN, page number and subject.

Let’s start at the most obvious place - take a look at what is lying around your house. Never throw anything away without judging its genealogical value carefully. Clean House- Gather all your genealogical stuff together. Have a box to throw things in if you don’t have time to categorize them now Scan or take pictures of old items, furniture, dishes, houses, photos, articles, wills, obits, etc.

Organize things – File Folders - Group items by category or family surname Notebooks - Use archival safe plastic sheets to protect your information Sticky notes – different colors for different families or types of information. Forms- Keep several copies of all census forms, research sheets. TO DO lists.
