St Joseph’s RC Primary School Meet the Teacher Morning September 2016

Year 6 We are very pleased with how the children have settled into Year 6. Teaching them to be independent and work with pride. Expectations are higher in terms of presentation and outcome- maybe asked to do work again. New curriculum wants them to become experts in their learning and the children will practice the skills until they become experts. All Year 6 children are expected to achieve the same objective but the way they get to this may be different from their peers. Expected to know the spellings given for homework and be able to rapidly recall times tables facts to the 12 x tables. Try and make lessons fun. Want all children to be happy in school, if worried about anything we need to know ASAP so we can deal with it and help them.

Outline of Autumn 1

PE Wednesday and Thursday Need to have full school PE kit because the children have to do PE –a record is kept of those children who have not brought a kit to school. Outside PE –can get very cold so the children can wear a tracksuit. Safer for the children to wear trainers outdoors. PE kit can be kept in school during term time and will be sent home each half term. If your child uses kit for after school clubs can you make sure that they bring them back to school.

Reading Comprehension Homework   Monday Spellings Reading Comprehension Tuesday Maths Wednesday SPAG Thursday Friday

Reading Read everyday –when they come into school. Read at home on a daily basis. Can read to themselves. This will help them become more confident readers. Reading journals need to be signed daily.

Uniform Children to wear full school uniform to school. All children to wear black shoes to school. Can you please ensure that all items of clothing has your child’s name in it so we can ensure they don’t lose items of clothing.

Snacks Children can bring a healthy snack to eat at playtime Can bring bottled water to drink in class –prefer bottles with a sports cap as bottles can be knocked over.

Jewellery No earrings or jewellery allowed. Watches should be worn –encourage them to tell the time.

Help your child Helping them with all homework. Monitor their reading and write in the planner. Question their understanding of what they have read-see parent booklet. Ensure your child can tell the time including interpreting the 24hr clock. Get your child to practice their times tables up to 12x should be known off by heart and in any order, with rapid recall in Year 6.

The door is always open! If you have any concerns or just want to talk we have an open door policy. We will try to see you then and there if we can but if we can’t we will make an appointment to see you ASAP.
