Sexually Transmitted Infections Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s)- are contagious infections that are spread from person to person by sexual contact STI’s are transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids during sexual contact. Sexual Contact – is any activity that involves anal, oral, or vaginal penetration. Carrier – a person that has an STI but shows no symptoms at all. Carriers can be very dangerous because they can be spreading an infection without knowing it. Sexual Abstinence – is the deliberate choice to refrain from sexual activity

Common STI’s Chlamydia – is the most common STI Symptoms – Discharge from genitals, painful urination, and severe abdominal pain ( some people show no symptoms) Long term consequences: Sterility and liver infection can result from Chlamydia Treatment: can be cured with antibiotics taken by mouth
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Symptoms : warts on the genital area, and women have abnormal pap-smear test. (Some people show no symptoms) Treatment : HPV can be treated but not cured. Sometimes warts can be removed and pap-smear test can detect pre cancerous conditions. Long term consequences : if left untreated cervical cancer can occur in women.

Genital Herpes Symptoms: outbreaks of painful blisters or sores around the genital area that recur, swelling in the genital area, and burning during urination. Treatment: Herpes cannot be cured. Treatment with antiviral medication can decrease the length and frequency of outbreaks and can decrease the spread of herpes. Long term consequences: if left untreated, herpes may cause cervical cancer in women. Can cause deformities to unborn babies.
