Welcome to Fifth Grade Move-Up Morning! January 17th , 2017

What to expect for your 5th grade students? switching classes for core academics advisory/advisor/advisees = home base (cubbies – not lockers) tablet – early October arrival science class five times a week choice of band or choir skills classes – Bell 2 library skills, study skills, art enrichment classes – Bell 5 art enrichment, lit quest, math lab dress code changes books and supplies are purchased Our ‘bridge’ with the LS = the collective wisdom and experience of Ms. Scheadler, Mrs. French, Ms. Thonnerieux, the PE team, Mr. Harsh for students taking French, and Mrs. Masterson for students taking Spanish We have many transitions events scheduled for the incoming fourth graders. What to expect for your 5th grade students?

What will the average school day look like for your 5th grader? 2 core classes morning snack 1 core class PE or foreign language break and lunch extended break M-W, Sacred Day – Th, and MS assemblies on F enrichment class – art, math, or literature study hall from 2:55-3:15 p.m. M-F in advisory Homework = Monday-Thursday and on weekends, unless it is a Homework Catch-Up Weekend, which happens once a month)

‘Touchpoint’ Times with Advisor 7:45-8:25 a.m. (5 days a week) Sacred Day = Thursdays after lunch for 40 minutes – whole grade or advisory MS assembly (Fridays for 20 minutes) special assemblies (For example, the 8th grade musical) 2:55-3:15 p.m. study hall (5 days a week)

Do 5th graders interact frequently with 7th and 8th graders? In essence, no. They do at the following times: weekly MS assemblies; and brief overlap in the Dining Terrace at lunch due to a staggered MS lunch period.

Dress Code Changes Tops collared shirt that buttons down the front, turtlenecks, rugby shirts, or front button polo shirts Pants / Shorts / Skirts Outerwear solid-colored sweatshirts (CCDS or plain), fleece jackets, sweaters, or jacket style from Country Cottage (Please note that many other types of sweatshirts are acceptable, including college sweatshirts.) Shoes casual, comfortable shoes in good repair, including athletic shoes

Things you might notice about your 5th grader during the course of the school year: Peers are the focus. want independence from parents and less help with homework moving from concrete to abstract thinking Fairness is always on the radar screen. testing limits = natural growth spurts increased appetite for food, physical activity, and talking love the challenge of team competition and cooperative groups still need help with time-management and organizational skills

Work Habits time and materials management development of organizational and study skills the importance of routine get to school between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. for a smooth start to the day student responsibility/ownership emphasized students asking teachers for the help they need

Transition Events for Incoming Fifth Graders in May 4th graders invited to a MS band showcase Hirsch meets with each 4th grade homeroom 4th graders have a ‘Move-Up to 5th grade’ experience and meet Mrs. Langenbahn for social studies, Mr. Gibson for math, and Mrs. Petre for English 4th grade parent meeting re: tablets and band instruments the day of the Columbus Field Trip. More information to follow MS Field Day with the 5th and 6th graders 4th graders invited to a MS Assembly Two 5th graders (girl and boy) visit each 4th grade homeroom for a question and answer session in the late spring
