Departmentalization Overview Mrs. Chappell - (1) Reading class + (2) Content classes Mr. McNerney - (3) Math classes (1 co-taught with Mrs. Colonnello)+ (1) Content class Miss Smith - (2) Reading classes (1 co-taught with Mrs. Colonnello) Mrs. Klementisz – Inclusion Facilitator - Provides both planning support and daily instructional support

Our Daily Schedule… 9:00-9:15 - Homeroom 9:15-9:45 - STAR 9:45-10:45 -  Period 1 10:45 - 11:30 -  SPECIALS 11:30 - 12:30 - Period 2 12:35 - 12:50 - RECESS 12:55 - 1:25 -  LUNCH  1:30 - 2:30 - Period 3 2:30 - 3:30 - Period 4 3:30 - 3:40 - Homeroom 3:40 - Dismissal It’s not really as busy as it looks! BUT…students MUST assume more responsibility for themselves, ASK questions when uncertain, maintain their organization, and engage in their own learning.

Academic Expectations LITERACY… English Language Arts {ELA}

ELA Focus Skills: Read and respond to a variety of texts Emphasis on finding supporting evidence for his or her thinking using specific examples from the text.  Attention to content vocabulary acquisition Making connections among ideas and between texts and supporting ideas with textual evidence.

Curriculum Connections Reading – Increased emphasis on non-fiction & significant increase in justifying WHY they think as they do – for both fiction and non-fiction Writing – Transcendent skill…it applies to ALL areas Reading / Writing / Speaking / Listening skills – THESE are the ultimate keys to success!

Academic Expectations MATH Not just computation or memorization… Significant emphasis on developing a depth of understanding of limited math topics while also developing their ability to utilize the Practices of Math Primary emphasis…FRACTIONS Concrete – Representational - Abstract

Curriculum Connections Ask questions, make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Develop and use models to demonstrate understanding Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information Engage in argument from evidence and critique the reasoning of others THE PRACTICES of MATHEMATICS

Curriculum Connections Science – Inquiry based with an increased integration of the “Practices of Science” as well as science content reading Social Studies – Increased attention to utilizing text and other source documents with an emphasis on the Big Ideas and Key Concepts Health – Assuming responsibility for personal interactions and making healthy choices (+ Human Growth & Development) Writing – Transcendent skill…Essential for ALL Content
