Considerations for Next Year in World Geography
What is Pre AP/AP? Stands for Pre Advanced Placement Pre AP classes prepare you for AP classes Pre AP & Advanced Placement (AP) classes earn you more grade points (enabling you to graduate higher in your class) AP classes allow you to earn college credit in high school (saving you time & money!)
What is Pre AP/AP? A more in-depth and challenging course that requires Individual initiative Essay writing Analytical reading Student interaction Preparation outside of class
Traits of a Pre AP Student Has a strong work ethic Willing & able to do homework Able to work independently (without parents) Reads/comprehends text with little/no input from teacher
Traits of a Pre AP Student Able to grasp concepts (new ideas) Willing to learn and change Is resilient (can struggle & overcome) Maintains high grades
What to Expect in Pre AP Classes where the majority of students want to learn & be challenged Engaging discussions that go beyond the textbook Different types of activities—not necessarily more projects—more essays Tests-- multiple choice questions may have 5 answer choices & more questions are short answer, essays, & “from your head” types of responses No study guides for tests
Why take Pre AP Geography? The 1st AP tests you can take are in Social Studies Human Geography (as substitute for World Geog in 9th or a later elective) World History (10th) European History (10th) U.S. History (11th) Other subjects only begin AP testing (earning college credit) in 11th grade You can earn more grade points if you include Social Studies AP electives
Requirements Do I have to take Pre AP to get into AP classes? No, but you will be more prepared for AP history courses if you take Pre AP World Geography & learn the strategies for success
Teacher Input Teachers complete an online form “advising” you to take level or Pre AP World Geography based upon EVIDENCE demonstrated in class this year regarding…. Your academic performance Your work ethic Students who desire to take AP Human Geography must specifically request that the teacher mark that course on the online form.
AP Human Geography (info from high school, not me) An option, but be prepared Are you ready to take a COLLEGE COURSE? Are you & your parents comfortable making a B or C? The speed of the course is intense Expect to be assigned to read 80 pp to read for homework each class Info in homework is completely different from what is taught in class
AP Human Geography (info from high school, not me) It’s a commitment for the whole year—can’t try it & drop down If taken in 9th grade it replaces World Geography, earns more grade points than Pre AP Another option is to take Pre AP World Geog in 9th grade & take the AP Human Geog class as a semester elective in 11th or 12th grade ***
Teachers are ADVISING you; The Choice is Yours to Make Consider whether Pre AP might be for you Talk to your parents Consider the number of other Pre AP courses you are taking (including foreign language) Consider your time commitments with extracurriculars & activities outside of school
