Nixon’s Administration SMART Assessment Mr. White’s US History 2

Question #1 President Nixon adopted a policy of revenue-sharing, in which states could decide what to do with federally granted money. This was part of Nixon’s goal of: Increasing the federal government’s power and role Decreasing the federal government’s power and influence Expanding the government’s role in public education Aggressively de-segregating the country

Question #2 During his presidency, Nixon used many different tactics, such as wire-tapping or CIA investigations, to monitor people that criticized his polices. Nixon saw these tactics as a way to: Stimulate the economy Decrease the government’s power Bring law and order to American society Help the Vietnamese achieve independence

Question #3 Nixon won the 1968 election by a slim margin. To ensure that he won re-election in 1972, he adopted his “Southern Strategy.” One part of this strategy to win southern voters was to: Accelerate de-segregation in public schools Increase funding for social welfare programs Allow for strong collective bargaining laws Slow down de-segregation efforts by the federal government

Question #4 When Nixon became president, the economy was suffering from what some called “stagflation” – a stagnant economy with high unemployment, and high inflation. On the next slide, select all choices which were causes of stagflation.

Question #4 Select all which were causes of stagflation. U.S.’s heavy dependence on foreign oil Nixon’s decision to drop the atomic bomb Lyndon Johnson’s deficit spending on war and social programs Increased competition with other industrial nations George Wallace’s efforts to stop segregation A flood of new workers into the workforce

Question #5 Nixon’s Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, helped Nixon develop the policy of realpolitik. Realpolitik doctrine said that: Foreign policies should be based on the power of the nations involved Foreign policies should be based on Ideals and moral principles Germany should control the balance of power in Europe The federal government should increase efforts to desegregate public schools

Question #6 Nixon wanted to heavily focus on matters of foreign policy in his administration. Choose all of the answer choices that were successes of his administration Improving relations with China through a personal visit Signing the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Treaty with the Soviet Union Winning a complete victory over the North Vietnamese in Vietnam

Question #7 One of Nixon’s successes as president, the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, was designed to improve relations with the Soviet Union. This agreement said that: Both nations would freeze their nuclear arsenals at the present levels Both nations would agree to stop spying efforts on each other Both nations would reduce the size of their navy and army Both nations would observe certain rules of war in the treatment of prisoners of war Vietnam would become a communist nation
