Grief & loss

What are the types of loss? The death of a loved one. The loss of a limb or ability (becoming paralyzed)

Stages of Loss- there are a few different models that show the stages of loss. Each person will react differently to their loss. Stages may or may not be experienced. There is no set order of the stages. The stages have no time limit.

Denial/ Numbness Emotional release Anger Bargaining Depression Remorse Acceptance hope

Denial- often times people are shocked and become numb to the situation. This in a way protects the person from breaking down emotionally. Emotional release- even though this is excruciatingly painful it is often very important in the healing process. Anger- becoming mad and often asking why? Bargaining- trying to reverse the loss.

Depression- feelings of emptiness or despair. Self reflection. Remorse- feeling guilty about unfinished business. Acceptance- the reality of the situation Hope- looking toward the future as the pain subsides.

How you can help Help the person recall positive , happy memories. Be a sympathetic listener Let the person heal at their own pace Be empathetic Empathy- the ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels.
