John Henry by Julius Lester Tall Tale

Summary   Folks knew John Henry was special from the day he was born.  He is a larger-than-life African American hero who races a steam drill to dig a railroad tunnel. After showing a man can work harder and faster than a machine, something tragic happens. The story is told in ballad form.

A tall tale is a story that has these features: Genre: Tall Tales A tall tale is a story that has these features: A larger-than-life, or superhuman, main character with a specific job. A problem that is solved in a funny way. Exaggerated details that describe things as greater than they really are. Characters uses everyday language/dialect. There are some real-life details.
