To provide a safe, clean, friendly ocean beach experience Beach Safety Mission To provide a safe, clean, friendly ocean beach experience offering a variety of fun recreational opportunities and quality amenities while conserving our coastal natural resources.

Roles of Beach Safety Staff Hidden Traffic engineers Animal control Environmental Conservation zone Turtles Disabled vehicle assistance Missing persons Lost and Found Special event staff Tower and sign maintenance Traditional Ocean rescue Emergency Medical Technician Law enforcement

Training and Competencies Lifeguards (Ocean Rescue Certified) 124 hours - practical / classroom / double tower AHA Professional Rescuer CPR – every 2 years Habitat Conservation Plan Training – every 5 years Turtle Washback Training – annually Daily physical training (drill) Specialized training (UTV, ATV, Jetski, Dispatcher) Employ approx. 225 seasonal lifeguards each year *Note: Approximately 50% of applicants do not complete training or meet qualifications. ALL EMPLOYEES MUST SUCCESFULLY COMPLETE A 500 METER SWIM ANNUALLY PER USLA ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

Training and Competencies BSS (E.M.T. and Ocean Rescue Certified) 195 hours - classroom / lab 60 hours - clinical State exam Habitat Conservation Plan Training – every 5 years Turtle Washback – annually 32 hours - recertification every 2 years Specialized Training (UTV, ATV, Jetski, Dispatcher) ALL EMPLOYEES MUST SUCCESFULLY COMPLETE A 500 METER SWIM TWICE A YEAR PER USLA ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

Training and Competencies Senior Lifeguard / Lifeguard Supervisors (L.E.O., E.M.T. and Ocean Rescue certified) 770 hours – classroom / practical State exam Habitat Conservation Plan Training – every 5 years Turtle Washback – annually 40 hours recertification every 4 years Specialized Training ALL EMPLOYEES MUST SUCCESFULLY COMPLETE A 500 METER SWIM TWICE A YEAR PER USLA ACCREDITATION STANDARDS

RES-Q Program Return Everyone Safely and Quickly Program created by Officer S. Medina Provide brightly colored wrist bands to families on the beach to put on children with a contact number in case lost 137 children were reported missing on the beach in 2014 After making a presentation to the Hotel/Motel Association; many requested to join the effort and wrist bands were provided to them for distribution to their guests

Future Initiatives We are always looking to expand our recruitment efforts to meet the challenging demands for qualified employees and to achieve a more diverse workforce: Development of a community outreach water-safety program to expose and train all types of potential applicants to ocean rescue performance requirements
