School District of the City of York Because it takes a village How to Help School District of the City of York Because it takes a village

Be a mentor The Freshman Academy offers a mentoring program to 9th graders. The goal is to match students with caring, committed adults who will expose students to new experiences. Interested? Contact Erin James at jameseri@k12.pa.us.

Volunteer for Career Day Most of the K-8 schools host at least one Career Day per year. The Freshman Academy is looking to infuse career exploration into the 9th grade this year. They’re looking for professionals who can help. Interested? Contact Erin.

Tutor Every school and program could use qualified volunteer tutors. If you have a knack for working with students 1-on-1, contact Erin.

Share your talents Each K-8 school has an after-school program, and they are always looking for enrichment activities that won’t break the bank. Have something to share? Contact Madai Holdsworth at holdsmad@ycs.k12.pa.us.

Coach York High currently offers football, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and track & field. Plans are in the works to restore baseball, soccer and cross country. Interested? Contact Ron Coursey at coursron@ycs.k12.pa.us.

Attend YCSD events One of the best things you can do for kids is to show up at their sports/arts events. The William Penn Performing Arts Institute performs a winter and spring musical each year. Watch newsletters and social media for announcements.

Adopt a classroom Teachers often purchase supplies for their classroom from their own pocket. They use sources like DonorsChoose.org but can always use local help. Used/new book donations always welcome! Interested? Contact Erin.

Be a role model Pre-K is always looking for guest readers. Got a community service project idea? Get some York City students involved.

Sponsor incentive programs The district is moving toward a positive-reinforcement discipline approach. We want to reward good behavior; not just punish bad behavior. Can you help us reward students’ good behavior?

Celebrate the kids Reject stereotypes. Demand equality. Challenge negative generalities about city kids. Enthusiastically, publicly celebrate the wonderful people who attend York City schools.
