DO NOW…. What makes a living thing “living”??? What do ALL living things have in common???

Environmental Science Addendum to Chapter 4 Introduction to Cells Environmental Science Addendum to Chapter 4

Basic information All living things (biotic factors) are made up of at least one cell. Cells are classified as either eukaryotic (having a nucleus) or prokaryotic (having no nucleus). Cells are very small. Unicellular organism= made up of 1 cell Multicellular organisms= made up of many cells

What is the difference between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell? Evolved 3.5 billion years ago No nucleus Cell membrane, cell wall, ribosomes, cytoplasm, flagella Bacteria (Archae bacteria and Eubacteria) Evolved 2.5 billion years ago Have a true nucleus Contains many organelles Plants, animals, fungi, and protists Eukaryotes Prokaryotes

Common Features between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells include: DNA Cytoplasm Cell membrane Ribosomes

Cell Membrane 2 functions: Protects and supports cell Regulates what enters/exits the cell- Selectively permeable= only some things can get in

Nucleus- “The Brain” Controls all of the cell’s activities Contains and protects the DNA Surrounded by the nuclear envelope regulates what enter/exits the nucleus

Cell Wall Supports and protects plant cells. Contains cellulose (complex carb) that hardens the cell wall. Has pores used to transport materials in/out Cell Video
