Presentation transcript:

Homage to Catalonia Homage to Catalonia is political journalist and novelist George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations in the Spanish Civil War, written in the first person. 1980

The Autobiography of Malcolm X This book describes Malcolm X's upbringing in Michigan, his maturation to adulthood in Boston and New York, his time in prison, his conversion to Islam, his ministry, his travels to Africa and to Mecca, and his subsequent career and eventual assassination at the Audubon Ballroom near 166th Street and Broadway in New York City.

The Art of War Offering ancient wisdom on how to use skill, cunning, tactics and discipline to outwit your opponent, this 2000 year old military manual is still worshipped by soldiers on the battlefield and managers in the boardroom as the ultimate guide to winning.

If This is a Man If This Is a Man is a work of witness by the Italian author Primo Levi. It was influenced by his experiences in the concentration camp at Auschwitz during the Second World War. It can be described as a memoir or a personal narrative, but it goes beyond mere recollection by seeking to consider the human condition in all its extremes through the narrative form.

Into the Wild In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a party of moose hunters. How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.

End Rhyme End rhyme is defined as when a poem has lines ending with words that sound the same. An example of end rhyme is the poem, Star Light, Star Bright.

Rhyme Scheme A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem or song. It is usually referred to by using letters to indicate which lines rhyme; lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other.

Stanza In poetry, a stanza is a division of four or more lines having a fixed length, meter, or rhyming scheme.

Meter Meter is a unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the beats. It is also called a foot. Each foot has a certain number of syllables in it, usually two or three syllables. The difference in types of meter is which syllables are accented and which are not.

Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

Repetition Repetition is a literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer.

Narrative voice of the poem (not the author) Speaker Narrative voice of the poem (not the author)

Allusion an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

Simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ).

Metaphor Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. In other words, a resemblance of two contradictory or different objects is made based on a single or some common characteristics

Personification Personification is a figure of speech where human qualities are given to animals, objects or ideas.  (ex- She did not realize that opportunity was knocking at her door.)

Sensory Language In writing, sensory language is a way for a writer to help the reader see or connect with an image, description, action, or scene. Sensory language is language that connects to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) to create an image or description.

Symbol a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.

Tone Tone, in written composition, is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject.
