Introduction to Good Sports

Good Sports objectives Reduction in risky drinking in the short and long-term by club members Reduction in alcohol related problems, specifically drink-driving Increase club viability and involvement with the community Before I discuss the program’s objectives, first a brief history why we need the Good Sports program - Back in 1996, Victoria Police approached the ADF and asked help in addressing the issue of binge drinking in community sports clubs; The ADF accepted this challenge and undertook research looking at what drives the alcohol culture within local clubs and the extend of binge drinking; Research also trialled new methods of reducing high-risk drinking in sport – methods that could strengthen the viability and effectiveness of sporting clubs in the community; Given the volunteer nature of local sporting clubs, a 3 staged, step-by-step accreditation program was developed and through a network of Community Partners and Project Officers was piloted in 2000 and launched in Victoria in 2001.

Evidence based program Good Sports’ Impact on Excessive Alcohol Consumption Recently completed four-year Randomised Controlled Trial results: Demonstrated that the modified Good Sports program reduced the prevalence of overall hazardous/harmful alcohol use, and the risk of dependence. Implementation of the program is therefore likely to make important contribution to reductions in alcohol-related harm in the community. RCT results will be available once the research has been published.

KPMG Report Economic evaluation of the Good Sports program – findings Return on Investment KPMG Report Economic evaluation of the Good Sports program – findings Reduced economic costs associated with short term risky drinking behaviour valued at approximately $9.7 million, or about $2,692 per club by Level 3; 963 people avoided a road accident, fall, and assault casualties by Level 3; For every one dollar invested in developing a Level 3 club, it is expected that $3.10 will be returned. Good Sports Accreditation levels

Accreditation Levels Compliance with relevant liquor licensing laws is the underpins Good Sports because clubs have a legal responsibility, and the associated duty of care to their members, to sell alcohol within the law. Level 1 – Compliance Level 2 – Bar Management & Practices Level 3 – Policy There is also Level 0 for clubs that do sell or consume alcohol at the club Go through Level 1 accreditation form

Where to from here? Our vision is to make every community sporting club a Good Sports club; Introduction of new versions of Good Sports to work with: Level 3 clubs (Graduate) Remote Junior Professional clubs
