p. 87 bottom DEFINITION: LAW OF DETACHMENT - simply says if the hypothesis of a conditional statement is true than you can state that the conditions have been met for the conclusion to be true.

Using the law of detachment If my dog, Tobe, sees a squirrel, then he will chase it. Tobe saw a squirrel. Tobe saw a squirrel! What can you conclude using the law of detachment? He's chasing it.

If Nat is in the lunchroom, then he is playing his guitar. What can you conclude using the law of detachment? Nat is playing his guitar.

The law of syllogism If my neighbors needed milk, then they sent their son, George to my house. If George came to my house, then he rang the doorbell. If he rang the doorbell, then my dogs barked. If my dogs barked George, then was scared of them. If George was scared of the dogs, then he ran screaming from my house. Conclusion: If my neighbors needed milk, then George ran screaming from my house.
