Classification of Computers Chapter 3 Classification of Computers Supercomputers Mainframes Minicomputers Microcomputers Insert a picture illustrating a season in your country.

Supercomputers The most powerful computers in terms of speed of execution and large storage capacity. Examples: NASA uses supercomputers to track and control space explorations.

Mainframes A mainframe computer is a large computer, often used by large businesses, in government offices, or by universities. It is powerful, large, and enable multiusers. Examples: insurance companies use mainframe computers to process information about millions of its policyholders.

Minicomputers Known as midrange computers. These are desk-sized machines used in medium scale applications. Examples: production departments use minicomputers to monitor various manufacturing processes and assembly-line operations.

Microcomputers This is the commonest computer seen everywhere. Microcomputers are the smallest in size and they come in different forms such as Laptop computer, Desktop, Palm Top computer, Notebook etc. Generally, they use one central. Nowadays, Microcomputers refer to Personal Computers. Examples: in Schools for learning purposes, Offices and homes.

Desktop computers The most commonly used personal computer. It comprises of a keyboard, mouse, monitor and system unit. Known as cabinet or chassis. It houses most of the components such as motherboard, disk drives, ports, switch mode power supply and add-on cards etc. Available in two models- horizontal model and tower model.

Laptop computers Known as notebook computers. Portable computers. They have a size of 8.5 x 11 inch and weigh about three-to-four kilos.

Palmtops computers (Tablets) These are called handheld computers. These are computing devices, which are small enough to fit into your palm. The size is like an appointment book. Mostly kept for personal use such as taking notes, developing a list of friends, keeping track of dates, agendas etc. They can also be connected to a PC for downloading data.
