What does the conflict reveal about the narrator’s parents? Assessment/Homework: Summary of what you read in 5 lines. Focus on plot events in the rising action. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Journal Grading Trade journals and get a highlighter. Does the journal entry have 5 lines? Did it answer the question completely? Did they use the vocabulary word sponsor? Any spelling or grammar errors? 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used the word sponsor 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used the word sponsor. 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, did not use sponsor. 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use sponsor. Journal Sample The narrator is a student who wants to be able to go to a school dance, but thinks it is unlikely she can get permission. The use of the word NYET and the reference to life in America suggests that the narrator may be an immigrant to the United States. Her aunt married a man from the United States and wants the narrator and her family to move here so she can then be their sponsor. Collins 2 Close Read Screen Cast p.5 Reread lines 68-78 on page 5 What is the conflict? What does it reveal about the narrators parents? DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

The conflict is the narrator’s desire to go to the Spring Fling, though she is sure her parents will not give their permission for her to do so. The narrator’s parents seem traditional and conservative. “Mama thinks it is strange to have parties and events after school when students should be doing their homework.” Her parents think school activities should focus on education rather than social activities. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Do Now 9/20 List 5 things you have learned about Maya so far. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. DLO: SWBAT recognize and analyze the elements of a story’s plot and the author’s methods of characterization through the performance task of writing a summary.

9/20 Agenda Do Now: Set up notebook and complete journal Discuss what we have learned about Maya Continue vocabulary chart as you read: Scuffle Listen to “My Favorite Chaperone” pgs. 9-12 P. 11 Notice the difference between Maya’s translation from Mr. Shanaman and her father. What does her translation suggest about Papa? In what ways does Nurzhan’s fight impact Maya? What does her reaction suggest about her? Assessment/Homework: Summary of what you read in 5 lines. Focus on plot events in the rising action. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Vocabulary Chart “My Favorite Chaperone” Word Guessed Definition Context Clues Page found on Sponsor A person who supports someone else's submission into a group. p. 4 Stun Shocked p.6 Dispatcher A person who sends out vehicles. p. 8 Scuffle p.10 Whimper DLO: SWBAT SWBAT familiarize themselves with the collection through a preview and background knowledge activity

Collins 2 Close Read Screen Cast p.11 Reread lines 293-314 on page 11 Notice the difference between Maya’s translation from Mr. Shanaman and her father. What does her translation suggest about Papa? In what ways does Nurzhan’s fight impact Maya? What does her reaction suggest about her? CHALLENGE: Find a quote or example from the text to support your answer. Use the vocabulary word scuffle. 5 lines minimum DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Collins 2 Maya’s translation suggests that papa can be volatile or quick to anger. Her translation minimizes the seriousness of the fight or scuffle so that her brother does not get into too much trouble with her father: ”involved in quite a nasty fight vs. “in a little fight;“ “the other boy…needed two stitches “ vs. “the other boy…was a little hurt.” 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used the word scuffle 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used the word scuffle. 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, did not use scuffle. 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use scuffle. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Key Events Maya receives a permission slip for the Spring Fling dance. Maya is distracted from the dance when her brother is suspended for fighting. Maya is distracted again when her father sees her encounter with Daniel. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Do Now 9/21 Why does Maya think her actions to change the translation from Mr. Shanaman to her father are justified? Do you think they are justified? DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

9/21 Agenda Do Now: Set up notebook and complete journal Grade journal entry on a 4 point scale. Continue vocabulary chart as you read: Whimper Listen to “My Favorite Chaperone” pgs. 13-16 Assessment/Homework: Summary of what you read in 5 lines. Focus on plot events in the rising action. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

While Maya admits that her actions were “sort of like telling lies,” she justifies them by saying that “some lies are okay.” She says that she was “scared to death of what Papa might have done.” I also think her actions were justified because Nurzhan had a right to defend himself against the bully. 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used a quote 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used a quote 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, used some evidence 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use evidence Journal Response DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Vocabulary Chart “My Favorite Chaperone” Word Guessed Definition Context Clues Page found on Sponsor A person who supports someone else's submission into a group. p. 4 Stun Shocked p.6 Dispatcher A person who sends out vehicles. p. 8 Scuffle A small fight p.10 Whimper p.16 DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Collins 2 In what ways is Maya like a typical middle school student? In what ways is she different? P.15 lines 427-462 Turn the question into the answer. Must be at least 5 lines. Must have 1 quote or evidence from the text. DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

Collins 2 Maya is like a typical middle school student because she enjoys sports, clothes, and boys. Maya shows that she enjoys being on the gymnastics team by saying, “I hope I can still be on the team.” when she misses the meet because of her brother. She is not like other middle school students because she has more responsibility than anyone else her age by taking care of her brother and having to be a translator for her parents. 4:No spelling errors, More than 5 lines, used a quote 3: One spelling error, 5 lines, used a quote 2: More than one spelling error, 3-4 lines, used some evidence 1: Multiple spelling errors, 1-2 lines, did not use evidence DLO: SWBAT analyze the conflict & rising action by answering Collins 2 questions.

9/22 Agenda Check homework Summaries from pages 3-16 (4) Pick up your MAZE Benchmark LIBRARY DAY Need a pencil/pen, an index card, and your library book. Take reading counts quizzes. DLO: SWBAT recognize and analyze the elements of a story’s plot and the author’s methods of characterization through the performance task of writing a summary.
