Cell Energy Photosynthesis vs Cell Respiration

Chloroplast Chloroplasts are present in plant cells. They capture the light energy from the sun and convert it into chemical energy (food molecules called glucose, C6H12O6). That process is called Photosynthesis

Let’s figure out the equation for Photosynthesis? According to the chloroplast diagram to the left…. What is the chloroplast taking in (the reactants)? The same as what we said plants need to survive What is the chloroplast producing or giving off (the products)? Glucose (C6H12O6 )

Write out your correct balanced equation of photosynthesis. Use your manipulatives to create the equation for photosynthesis (Place the correct name of the molecule below it in the equation and make sure your equation is balanced using the correct coefficients) Reactants Products Write out your correct balanced equation of photosynthesis.

Cellular Respiration

Review of Photosynthesis Before we go into cellular respiration, let’s review what happens in the process of photosynthesis. (use the words of your manipulative) Make sure students created the correct equation for photosynthesis.

Let’s take a look at how plants and other cells use the glucose that is produced. Energy is packaged in glucose during the process of photosynthesis. However, the glucose molecule is bound together. Do you think cells can use this glucose in its current form? No So what has to happen to the glucose, if it is bound together, in order for cells to use it? The bond has to be broken and a more useable form of energy should be produced.

If glucose is used and energy in the form of ATP is produced, in which cell organelle do you think cellular respiration takes place? mitochondria What types of cells have mitochondria? animal cells, plant cells, fungus cells & protist cells

Mitochondria Mitochondria convert chemical energy stored in food molecules (glucose, C6H12O6 ) into energy (ATP) that is more convenient for the cell to use. This process is called Cellular Respiration

Now we are going to build our equation for Cellular Respiration using the same manipulative.

Manipulative Place your arrow in the center of the equation. What do we start the reaction with? If glucose is being used and energy in the form of ATP is produced, place those two word pieces of your manipulative on the correct side of the arrow. Place the remaining word pieces on the side of the equation you think they should go. Keep in mind that this process is happening within the cell and when cells change energy, it is a chemical process. If students begin to place the sun in the equation, remind them sunlight energy cannot be produced so what is the only type of energy existing in this equation.

Does your Cellular Respiration formula look like this one? What will the cell use the ATP for? C6H12O6 + 6O2    6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP (energy for the cell to use for other processes) Name some specific process of the cell.

In your own words, explain what you think this analogy is saying? An analogy can be drawn between the process of cellular respiration in our cells and a car. The mitochondria are the engines of our cells where sugar is burned for fuel and the exhaust is CO2 and H2O. Note that in a car that burned fuel perfectly, the only exhaust should theoretically be CO2 and H2O also. Note: O2 goes into the car through the throttle body (like our mouth) and the air filter (like our nose).
