Do you support Women participation in political leadership ? High support for women participation in political leadership at 77% amongst females and 78% amongst males. Support higher amongst the younger age groups. This creates an opportunity for women to come out and publicly contest for political seats

Do women in this region come out to vie for political positions ? Base 260 Respondents interviewed felt there was low turn out by women in Tana River to vie for political positions. In the 2013 General Election there was only one woman in the county political arena as the woman rep. Currently, there are 11 women contestants for the women rep seat.

#Motivators for Women Participation PARS Research You and PARS #Motivators for Women Participation What are some of the reasons that influence women to participate in political leadership? 2.25 pm To serve the nation - 28% For equal representation of both genders - 27% It is my constitutional right to vie for any seat - 20% We are more empowered and able than men - 16% Accountability; we are better at this unlike men - 5% They have full support from the community/encouraged by the community - 2% Men failing to meet their goals they are supposed to/ to challenge men - 1% 2.26 pm

They are not well equipped in terms of education - 34% PARS Research You and PARS And what are the reasons that hinder women to participate in political leadership? 2.29 pm Inequality in the society; the community won't allow them to vie for any seat - 18% They are not well equipped in terms of education - 34% Cultural factors - 9% Religious factors - 4% They have many responsibilities; best suited to focus on family well-being - 7% They lack confidence in emerging as electoral winners - 3% They are financially limited which is further hampered by corruption - 17% 2.31 pm Women will need encouragement and support from the community. Gender Stereotypes must be broken. Financial support is also important as well as a balance in the gender roles at home which will help increase their participation.

Would you vie for a political seat? In Tana River the younger women as well as those with some level of education expressed interest in vying for political seats

And why would women not vie for a political seat? PARS Research You and PARS And why would women not vie for a political seat? 2.42 pm Inadequate education background - 36% Traditionally not allowed not willing and interested lack of encouragement from community 19% religion hindrance men are given first priority lack of motivation 3. It’s a dirty game and exposes me to dangers - 1% 4. Because of old age/ have no time for politics - 3% 5. Limited finances hence a participation of the wealthy - 4% 6. No comment - 29% 2.42 pm Women who answered this question felt that low levels of education and cultural barriers were the main limitations to their participation in politics

Do women aspirants face GBV as a result of their political ambitions More than half of the respondents felt that women aspirants face GBV due to their political ambitions. This factor could be a constraint to women participation in political leadership.

(mean) Gender Based Violence was identified as the most influential in women participation in political leadership. For stakeholders and policy makers, there is need to identify ways in which women seeking political positions can be protected differently from their male counterparts
