Session Objectives Participants will learn more about each of the process conditions necessary for a successful family engagement event. Participants will observe interactive strategies that can strengthen their own family engagement events. Participants will understand how to embed the process conditions into their own literacy events.

Why is family engagement important? 40 years of research show that when families are involved, students have: Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates Better school attendance Increased motivation Better self-esteem Lower rates of behavior issues Family participation in education is twice as predictive of students’ academic success as family socioeconomic status.

Dual Capacity-Building Framework 5/2/2018 Dual Capacity-Building Framework Developed using research on effective home-school partnership strategies, adult learning and motivation, and leadership development. Framework serves as a compass; a direction for the development of effective high-impact strategies and initiatives. The framework was released last year and is the culmination of over 50 years of research. And the researchers looked at a few different fields of study, including research on effective home-school partnerships, adult learning and motivation, and leadership development. So they really took a lot of things into consideration when developing the framework. So rather than being seen as a roadmap, the framework really serves as more of a compass, a direction or guide for you as you begin to pan you FE programming. The framework does not give you a plan-it doesn’t say do a, b, and c and then you're done, but rather it provides the fundamental pieces or components that should be embedded within your family engagement programming. Every district and school is different and has a unique set of needs so this is not a one size fits all solution to family engagement-you have to design your programming to fit your particular context. Activity On a piece of chart paper, design a family engagement event that incorporates all five process conditions. Events should always be Linked to Learning: Think about important skills and/or standards in your grade span. In addition to making it Linked to Learning, what will you do to make you event: Relational? Developmental? Collaborative? Interactive?
