Sense and Sensation Perception Psychology Marina Wardaya, S.sn

Class Objective Students understand types of perception derived from human body senses that can induce sensation Students are aware of how human sensory inputs works

The Fundamentals

What is Sensation? How we see, hear, taste, and smell things, it requires that the mind actively process the information it receives. Our senses process the information unconsciously or consciously. Our perceptions of that information are key to how we relate ourselves to the surroundings

Sensation vs Perception Perception is often confused with sensation. Sensation is an impression, often confused with sensation. Sensation is an immediate impression when stimuli is received by our brain and it’s not organized and connected to other memories connected to that type of stimuli On the contrary, Perception is thought.

Why we need to understand sensation? Understanding the function, helps us to recognize human behavior where sensation and perception are faulty.

Senses Your interpretation of sensation may also change with time. Your senses need time to adapt the surrounding.

Human Sensory Inputs

Sensory Inputs It’s a connector between soul in a conscious state with the environment. 5 Human sensory inputs are eye, tongue, nose, ear and skin

Eyes Eyes is the organ who can detect lights . in it’s fundamental form, eyes “see” when is dark and when is sufficiently bright

Visual Perception You got visual perception from eyes. Developed early during infancy, influence babies to understand his/her world. Visual perception are usually the main topics when discussing general perception and the most talkable.

Ear Ear is an organ which can detect and recognize sound. It also instrumental in balancing body position. Sound stimuli is delivered to our brain through senses which connect ear to our brain.

Auditory Perception (Sound) You got auditory perception from ear. It’s a capability to recognize sound. Can provide information as well as deludes it. In a different form can induce tranquility to chaos.

What is Music? Sound / Impression we capture with our senses. An Art form Any sound produced intentionally by a person or group and served as music Some people considered music as a non-form entity According to Aristotle's, music has the capabilities to reconcile a troubled heart, has a recreational therapy value and foster patriotism

Tongue Tongue is a collection of skeletal muscle on the floor of the mouth that can help break down food by chewing and swallowing. Tongue is known as a tasting senses which contains taste buds Tongue also helps you when you need to speak.

Taste You get taste perception through tongue. Main flavor, sweet, salty, sour, bitter. The older we get the less acute is our taste reception

Nose Nose is a prominent feature in our face, function as an inlet to the air we breathe, filtering air and warming it. Also takes part in sound resonance.

Smell Perception Human get smell perception from nose When we breathe, gas chemical enters through our nose. Chemicals as a smell source will be dissolved in the mucous membrane, which in turn will stimulate fine hair, this sensation will be transferred to the brain which will interpret this information to us.

Skin Skin has blood vein, hair follicle, nerve sensors which functions as a stimuli receptors, barrier to physical damage and disease and body temperature adjustment.

Touch Perception You get touch perception from skin Includes temperature, pressure and pain.

Perception Our perceptions determine how we interpret our surroundings.

How do we make sense of what we’ve sensed? Constancy Distance / depth Movement

Work that affects senses ?
