9/11 On September 11, 2001 four airliners were hijacked by militants associated with al-Qaeda, the extremist group. Two of the planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York City( also known as the Twin Towers). The third plane hit the Pentagon. Which is just outside of Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Slide by Brooklyn

9/11 Cont. Over 3,000 people were killed during these attacks on New York and D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters (September 11th fast facts.) Slide by Brooklyn

Television and Music Censorship The television coverage of the 9/11 attacks was the longest uninterrupted news event in the history of the U.S. It lasted for 93 hours straight. Because of the attacks many movies were either cancelled or at the least edited. About 45 movies in total were effected by the attacks. Slide by Brooklyn

Television and Music Censorship Cont. Even TV shows that had been previously aired were edited. Including an episode of The Simpsons. The opening credits for a couple of shows were changed so that they didn’t show the twin towers and the Disney attraction, The Timekeeper, was closed on September 11, 2001. Slide by Brooklyn

The Patriot Act "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001“. Introduced less than a week after September 11 and was signed into law on October 26, 2001 by President George W. Bush (ala.org). Slide by Christa

The Patriot Act Cont. Amended 10 different acts like, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act(ala.org). Slide by Christa

The Patriot Act Cont. Has five primary functions: update the law to include new technologies and threats, allows government to use tools to investigate organized crime, allows the government to surveillance for terrorist related agendas, allows the government to obtain and share information from multiple databases in order to put together a big picture, and increases criminal charges for terrorist crimes (justice.gov). Slide by Christa

The Patriot Act Cont. President Barack Obama signed the Patriot Sunsets Extension Act of 2011 on May 26, 2011(ala.org). The Patriot Extension Act of 2011 extended: roving wiretaps, searches of business records, and conducting surveillance of suspected terrorist-related individuals (ala.org). Slide by Christa

The Patriot Act Cont. The primary functions of the Patriot Act lead to the following changes in government: Department of Homeland Security (January 2001), President's Surveillance Program (shortly after the Patriot Act), National Defense programs, and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (December 17, 2004) (justice.gov). Slide by Christa

Department of Homeland Security A Cabinet Department of the United States Federal Government. Proposed by the U.S. Commission on National Security in January of 2001 and became official in November of 2002 combining 22 departments and agencies (dhs.gov). Mission is to protect our country from security breaches relating to terrorism, and natural disasters (dhs.gov). Slide by Christa

Department of Homeland Security Cont. Homeland Security created a comprehensive strategy to fight terrorism that was reconstructed in 2005 by Secretary Chertoff to include organizational initiatives and the six-point agenda (dhs.gov). “Increase overall preparedness, particularly for catastrophic events” “Create better transportation security systems to move people and cargo more securely and efficiently” Slide by Christa

Department of Homeland Security Cont. “Strengthen border security and interior enforcement and reform immigration processes;” “Enhance information sharing with our partners” “Improve DHS financial management, human resource development, procurement and information technology” “Realign the DHS organization to maximize mission performance.” Slide by Christa

Stellar Wind Information collected under the President's Surveillance Program. The NSA, part of the President’s Surveillance Program, was approved by President George W. Bush shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks and was revealed to The New York Times in 2008 by, Thomas Tamm (nsa.gov). Slide by Christa

Stellar Wind Cont. The program uses warrantless wiretapping from 48 hours to 7 days under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendment of 2008 to collect all telephone conversations, financial transactions, internet activity, and e-mail communications of American Citizens into a large database in order to detect domestic terrorism threats (nsa.gov). Slide by Christa

Stellar Wind Cont. The NSA obtains information from the Treasury Department concerning suspicious activity reports (SARS). They use this classified information to provide tactical strategies to the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, government agencies, industry partners, and select allies in order to help war planners and war fighters (nsa.gov). Slide by Christa

National Defense Programs Educate about Terrorism and Options for Response. The war on Terror requires informed policymakers and citizens to understand security issues. National Defense programs respond to the limits of U.S. military and intelligence capabilities by addressing difficult questions pertaining to international and domestic laws (cfr.org). Slide by Christa

National Defense Programs Cont. Approximately 1,931 private companies and 1,271 U.S. government organizations work on National Defense Programs in about 10,000 different locations across the United States. (toptenz.net). Many people working for National Defense Programs hold top-secret security clearances. These people do things like: analyze the flow of money relating to terrorist networks, which helps protect against terrorist attacks (toptenz.net). Slide by Christa

Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act was an act of Congress signed by President George W. Bush that affects federal terrorism laws. This act created many different boards and different positions. Including, The Director of National Intelligence (DNI), the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), and the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board(Us Immigration Legislation online.) Slide by Brooklyn

Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act Cont. The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) is the person who serves as the head of the U.S. Intelligence Community. Because of this act, the CIA Director has to report directly to the DNI. This Act is also notable for a section in which it tells the Commissioner of Social Security to “restrict the issuance of multiple replacement social security cards to 3 per year and 10 for the life of the individual,” (Top 10 U.S Government Changes Since 9/11).
