ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA) Reading and writing workshop model Mini-lesson (5-10 minutes) takes place on carpet Teacher models the skill or strategy being taught Students turn and talk with learning partners to use skill/strategy Students find a comfortable area around the room to complete independent practice

Social Studies Social Studies will be infused into the ELA curriculum Students will be reading non-fiction material based on the Social Studies standards for 5th grade Covered topics : 2016 Presidential Election, The Age of Exploration, Colonial America, the Events Leading up to The Revolutionary War, The Revolutionary War and will finish with the year off with The Declaration of Independence Current events will be incorporated in October

HOMEWORK Please be sure to check your child’s planner each night We take class time to fill in the homework You can also locate the homework online at www.ridgefieldschools.com There is a link to the Social Studies textbook online as well There is a mandatory 20 minute minimum of independent reading each night

Homework Policy If homework (this includes projects) is not handed in on the day it is due, there is an automatic 10 points deducted If homework is not handed in the following school day there is another 10 points deducted If homework is not handed in on the 3rd day it is an automatic zero (exceptions do apply)

PARCC You can locate practice tests for the PARCC at http://practice.parcc.testnav.com/# Please make sure that your child is typing an hour a week at home There are many “typing tutors” online and available for sale (Mavis Beacon is highly recommended)

Grading Policy Tests/Projects 50% Quizzes 30% Homework 10% Preparedness 10%

Extras Please make sure your child has a flash drive labeled with his/her name Classic Book Report due October 9th book must be approved and is due by Monday September 18th Your child may bring water and only water to drink throughout the day (this does not include what they are having with lunch)
