COSEWIC to SARA Challenges and Opportunities for Species Recovery

xgod/sJ6 ttC6bsd/sizb r[ZFx3J smJ5 wkwn9olxdNQ5 Wd/z8k5 Welcome to a presentation by the Canadian Wildlife Service on the proposed listing of Peregrine Falcons under the Species at Risk Act. In April 2007, COSEWIC (the expert committee) assessed the health of peregrine falcon populations in Canada. The expert committee has decided that their status has improved, but that they are still at risk. This slide show will describe peregrines and where they live in Nunavut. We will also discuss the proposed change to the listing status of peregrine falcons and what that will mean for the people of Nunavut. After the presentation, we are hoping that the HTO will be able to decide whether or not you support the proposed listing of Peregrine Falcons under the Species at Risk Act or whether you need more information or would like to request that we meet with you in person. Your information, concerns and position on the proposed listing are important because they must be considered by both the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, and the Minister of the Environment, when they decide whether or not to approve the proposed listing of Peregrine Falcons. vNbu ]smJoEp6Jx4f5 ytWE @))* uxoZw5 wcloEp4fq5 x7ml ]smJoEp6Jxfq5

Here is a map that shows where Peregrine Falcons nest in Nunavut. The green areas are where we know they occur… The light coloured areas are where we expect them to occur but have not yet been able to confirm their presence. We expect them in these light coloured areas because its similar habitat to areas where we know they breed, and because its so close to the confirmed range. Do you think this map is correct? Are we missing some places in Nunavut where peregrines breed?

Between the 1940’s and 1970’s, DDT was used to kill insects that ate crops. This chemical caused the egg shells of peregrines to thin and their eggs didn’t hatch. In 1970 Canada banned the use of DDT. 1975 had the lowest number of peregrines in Canada, they had disappeared from Eastern Canada, Alberta and the interior of British Columbia. By 2005, biologists estimate that there are almost as many peregrines now as there were before 1970. This is because DDT is no longer used in Canada, the US or Mexico and because of captive breeding and reintroduction programs. This is good news, COSEWIC has improved their status to Special Concern, they no longer considered to be at high risk of becoming extinct! The expert committee thinks that peregrines should be considered special concern because they are sensitive to chemicals in the environment and we don’t know how this will affect them. Also, even though DDT has been banned in North America, it is still used on peregrine wintering grounds in South and Central America. Gordon Court x0posZz

If Peregrine Falcons are listed as Special Concern, a management plan will be required. A management plan outlines management actions that will be taken to ensure that this species does not start to decline and end up as Threatened or Endangered. A management plan is required 3 years after it is officially listed under SARA. If Peregrine Falcons are listed as Special Concern under SARA, there would be no prohibitions and critical habitat would not have to be identified or protected for this species. However there are restrictions about peregrines under the Nunavut Wildlife Act.
