7th Grade Course Requirements For the year: RELA (1 period) Math Science Texas History For one semester: Health PE (or athletics for the year)

Student Registration Card (Front) Number your top choices 1-7. Start with “1” as your first choice. Returned by February 6 to Cultures Teacher Verification letters will be sent home with student report cards. Deadline to change elective choices is June 10.

How Many Electives Do 7th Graders Have? Rela is only one period this year. This allows for 2 periods of electives, one semester of health, and one semester of PE. Some electives are one semester and others are two semesters.

One Semester Electives Cheer Fall semester only (after students are selected in tryouts) conditioning activities, skill development in several cheerleading and gymnastic techniques, and specific preparation for game performances

One Semester Electives Theater Arts 1 Different than Theater Arts in 6th Grade Students are afforded opportunities in duet acting, pantomime, oral interpretation, and other dramatic and humorous acting assignments which require written assignments and memorization of script material.

One Semester Electives Beginning Art For students who were unable to take beginning art in 6th grade

One Semester Electives Intermediate Art - prerequisite for middle school Advanced Art drawing, shading, painting with watercolors and acrylics, clay sculpture, and design Applied Art - designed for students with creative abilities pottery making, stitchery, papier mache, metal relief, jewelry making Arts and Crafts - design arts and crafts projects using leather, printmaking, textile, papier-mâché, and simple jewelry

One Semester Electives Debate Contemporary debate topics will be researched and debated on both sides. Students are required to do research and preparation outside of class.

One Semester Electives Speech Planning and organizing speeches while applying library research skills to incorporate research-based sources into speech development and performance

One Semester Electives Journalism Prerequisite for Yearbook in 8th Grade Students will learn to write news stories, features, sports stories, and headlines.

One Semester Electives Broadcasting Students learn the basics of writing, producing, and directing a news broadcast. Students will be responsible for anchoring a newscast, developing their interviewing skills and learning how to use a camera and editing equipment

One Semester Electives Foods for Today Students will learn the basics of food preparation and nutrition in this one semester course including quick breads and breakfast foods. Snack foods, pastries, cookies, fruits, pasta, yeast breads, and beverages will also be explored.

One Semester Electives Introduction to Spanish Prerequisite for Spanish I in 8th Grade basic conversational skills and a vocabulary study of topics such as greetings, introductions, colors, numbers, days, months, classroom objects, food, clothing, feelings, weather, family, telling time, and selective grammar points

One Semester Electives Exploratory Languages Information concerning culture, customs, and simple conversational skills This study will expose the student to the languages of Latin, Spanish, French, and German.

One Semester Electives Career Portals Career Portals introduces students to various career opportunities and identifies the pathways within one or more careers using technology in a cooperative, hands-on environment.

One Semester Electives Introduction to Engineering and Technology Students will use computers and conventional hand tools to design and produce individual and group projects. Materials used include metal, woods, and/or plastics. Safe use of selected tools and equipment will be covered.

One Semester Electives Introduction to Keyboarding Prerequisite for Business Information Management in 8th grade The focus of this course involves learning the keyboard correctly and formatting basic documents.

Year-long electives (Both Semesters) Athletics – requires physical AVID – application required (due March 1) Band Choir Orchestra

Let’s talk about athletics… Athletics lasts the entire school year. You are required to dress out in a KMS athletic uniform and appropriate shoes If you do not make a team, you will be in off season which involves a lot of conditioning and running. A Physical Night will be held in May. Students must have their physical prior to participating in athletics.

Advancement Via Individual Determination What is AVID? Advancement Via Individual Determination an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle

What are the student requirements? AVID students must: attend an AVID elective class (2 semesters) enroll in at least one Pre-AP academic class each semester maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes maintain the AVID binder with assignment and grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes complete all homework assignments and commit to studying every night

How do I apply? Select AVID on your course registration card Complete an application Available tonight or on the KMS website Applications are due Feb 6 with course registration cards.

Parent Request for Change in Placement RELA, Science, Social Studies If you are requesting a change in placement, please circle and initial your request.

Change in Placement Math Students may not move from on-level 6th grade math to PreAP 7th grade math unless they earn credit by exam. District provides credit by exam testing each summer.

PreAP Classes Math, RELA, Science, and Social Studies Homework expectations are higher in PreAP. Greater depth and complexity 7th Grade PreAP Math moves at a faster pace to prepare students for Algebra in 8th grade

Why PreAP? PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in college level course work in high school and beyond. All students are encouraged to access the most rigorous curriculum in which they can be successful, generally defined as earning a C or better semester average.

What is a split, and how could it affect my schedule? A split in a schedule occurs in order to give a student an elective choice he or she wanted and is used to balance class sizes. A split can affect your schedule by moving you to a different period with the same teacher and in some cases to a different period with a different teacher. A split only occurs if there is no other way to make your schedule work.

Math & Reading Strategies READ 180 Year long classes that take the place of an elective Students are selected based on academic performance and data collected.

Course Verification Sheets Sent home with 3rd and 4th nine-week report cards This is not a schedule. Lists the student’s top choices, but changes may be needed based on when classes are offered, class conflicts, etc.

Student Planner Students are encouraged to use their Cougar Planner daily. This is a great tool to keep students organized and to communicate with teachers.

Lockers! All students will be reassigned lockers for 7th grade. Locker shelves are yours to keep and use next year.
