The battle of Borodino is the largest battle of the war of 1812 between Russia and France. It was held on August,26 (September,9) in 1812 near the village Borodino.

Russian army was under the command of M.Kutuzov French army was commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte

At Borodino the Russian army, defending our country, fought with the army of the French ruler Napoleon I. By 1812 Napoleon managed to bring many European countries under his control . He organized a very large army and wanted to break up Russia. The Russian army was less than the Napoleon's army and it had to retreat.

But Russian army did not want to give up But Russian army did not want to give up. Kutuzov decided to block the road to the capital of our country.

Russian troops were waiting for this fight Russian troops were waiting for this fight. Kutuzov skillfully organized the Battle of Borodino. On 7 September 1812 outnumbered French forces constantly attacked Russian ones from 6 am to 6 pm. The battle lasted 12 hours. A lot of soldiers of Russia and France were killed in the fight. Although our army suffered heavy casualties Napoleon could not achieve victory in the battle of Borodino.

It is believed that Russian troops were winners (in Russian history), but the next day M.Kutuzov gave the order to retreat because of the heavy losses.

Borodino Battle in Painting and Literature Events of the Patriotic War of 1812 found broad reflection in literature and fine arts of the 19th-20th centuries, from the drawings made by participants of the Borodino Battle right in the course of operations to works created in the early 20th century for the 100th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812 and to Leo Tolstoy's illustrious novel War and Peace. The outstanding Russian painter of battle scenes Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin at the end of the 19th century actively worked on a series of pictures dedicated to 1812. One of the main works of this series is the canvass Napoleon at the Borodino Heights. Works by Russian poets and writers (Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Pushkin, Simeon Raich, Vasily Zhukovsky) wonderfully supplement painting and drawings on the Borodino Battle.

A lot of films have been dedicated to the Borodino Battle, including Sergey Bondarchuk's world-known screen version of War and Peace (1967) and the comedy Hussar Ballad (1962) by Eldar Ryazanov.
