Addition to study guide: Northwest Ordinance Northwest Ordinance of 1787: Established a government for the Northwest Territory Outlined the process for admitting a new state to the Union Guaranteed that newly created states would be equal to the original thirteen states. Protected civil liberties and outlawed slavery in the new territories.

Washington Presidency, 1789-97 Jay’s Treaty: Signed 1794 with Britain. Britain had attacked American ships headed for France and there were unresolved issues from the Revolution. Unpopular with the American public who favored France, this treaty prevented war. Pinckney’s Treaty: Signed 1795 with Spain. Granted Americans access to the Mississippi River and port of New Orleans which were controlled by the Spanish. Popular with American public.

Adams Presidency, 1797-1801 Quasi-War with France: First time American neutrality was threatened. France was angry about Jay’s Treaty and refused to see the Americans in France (XYZ Affair). A two-year undeclared war followed. French ships harassed and captured American vessels and tried to block American trade with Britain. The United States engaged in a military buildup, with George Washington brought out of retirement to serve again as Commander-in-Chief.

Madison Presidency, War of 1812 Britain was blocking American ships & impressing American soldiers Andrew Jackson beat the British AFTER the Treaty of Ghent was signed, but the public saw the victory as a decisive win. It led to nationalism and pride. Federalists had been against the war, but after it ended well, they were seen as unsupportive Neither American or Britain won. No land was gained or lost. Americans had an increased sense of pride and nationalism at having beat off the British twice. Also, America was independent in industry and production.
