Scholars Portal Update UTL Reference Services Committee June 2004

Project Goals Support research, teaching, and learning Provide Ontario researchers with access to important digital resources (current and historic) covering all disciplines Make access easier by reducing the number of interfaces researchers must learn Enable researchers to explore relationships between digital objects Foster end-user rather than mediated access Make content available in environments where it is used Provide researchers with tools to allow them to manage content more effectively

Project “Philosophy” Ownership rather than access whenever possible Cooperate if we find we are doing the same things, and then specialize Central resource and technology management, but local branding and delivery of services

Content and Services

E-Journals ScienceServer / EJOS 6.4M articles 4,617 journals Backfiles for Elsevier journals Average 20% increase in use across all schools New content in 2004: Blackwell, Nature, Emerald, IOP New server software in 2005 (Encompass for Journals OnSite)

Content and Services

Document Delivery RACER / VDX Document delivery service shared by OCUL libraries (5 libraries still to be implemented) End-user document requesting Z39.50 searching of OCUL library catalogues Email notification Online tracking of requests

Content and Services

Abtracts and Indexes CSA IDS Common interface Local load (including non-CSA databases) Single search A&I and e-journal metadata Subject access Basic and advanced searching, including thesaurus-based searching

Content and Services

Citation Management RefWorks Licensed for use by all OCUL libraries Consortia server <refworks.scholarsportal.info> Web-based citation management tool (no software required except a browser) API for importing records Write-and-Cite

Content and Services

Electronic Gov’t Documents O-Space Implementation of MIT’s DSpace for OCUL Proposal for a repository of electronic government documents in development by OCUL-IR Exploring partnership with Ontario legislative library

Content and Services

Geospatial Data OGDE Project Proposal of OCUL Map Group Build a graphical query tool for exploring OGDE data sets Based on ARCIMS software Prototype in development at U of Toronto Potential for extension to other datasets Foster direct user access and non-traditional uses of GIS data Take advantage of central storage for terabytes of data

Connecting Content and Services

OpenURL Terminology Syntax Source Target Resolver Knowledge Base Method of encoding bibliographic data in a URL Source A database or service that can generate an OpenURL from a citation (not all database vendors can do this yet) Target A database or service that can deliver the document described by an OpenURL Resolver A service that maps an OpenURL to a Target specific URL Knowledge Base A database of library holdings and linking rules that localize and contextualize links

Syntax Genre Object metadata SID/PID URL Encoded Syntax Base URL http://resolver.scholarsportal.info/openurl? genre=article& title=Journal of Banking and Finance& issn=0378-4266& date=2000-03& volume=24& issue=3& spage=395& aulast=Narayanan& aufirst=Ranga& atitle=Insider Trading and the Voluntary Disclosure of Information by Firms& sid=InfoSource

OpenURL Syntax Source Target Resolver Knowledge Base Method of encoding bibliographic data in a URL Source A database or service that can generate an OpenURL from a citation Target A database or service that can deliver the document described by an OpenURL Resolver A service that maps an OpenURL to a Target specific URL Knowledge Base A database of library holdings and linking rules that “localize” links

Knowledge Base Used to normalize, enhance, and contextualize metadata provided by the link source: The reference might not include an ISSN, yet the target link to the publisher requires it abbreviated titles or author names in the citation CrossRef, PubMed lookups De-hyphenating ISSNs Library holdings and appropriate copy (different than DOI’s)

Link to referenced work Source Site Specific OpenURL reference Resolver Link to referenced work A p p r o p r i a t e T a r g e t s T a r g e t s

Extended Services Anything else you might want to do with a citation Document delivery request Catalogue search Save to RefWorks (or myLibrary) Journal Impact Factor Suggested sources, services

Source Resolver Link Target

SFX and OCUL OCUL has negotiated a license for SFX from Ex Libris 1 Shared Instance The license allows us to run a common resolver containing information about shared holdings 20 Site Instances Local resolvers will hold information about institutional resources and allow for local management and local branding

Implementation Strategy Provide the tools and training to support local implementation efforts Identify areas where we can share information and efforts (e.g. documentation, source and target testing, interface design)

Implementation People Local implementation team (e-resource management, information services, systems) Site contact (liaison) OCUL Advisory Group (focus on consortia, facilitate information sharing, sort out priorities) Scholars Portal Project Staff (hardware and software installation, coordinate training, help desk support, programming) SFX Implementation Specialist (trainer and guide)

Local Implementation Tasks Training (first two weeks of July – tentative) Data preparation (for batch activation of targets) Service selection Interface customization Testing Source activation End-user instruction Statistics and evaluation

Connecting Content and Services

NISO OpenURL v 1.0 Create an OpenURL Framework Separate the “information package” from the transport Formalize the “framework” for the information package Provide a means to extend to non-bibliographic domains (e.g. museum objects, learning objects) Enhanced contextualization (referring object, user)

Genres v 1.0 Journal Issue Article Conference Proceeding Preprint Book Report Document Dissertation Patent Others can be registered

Other Changes Representation Key encoded values XML Others can be registered Constraint languages Matrix XML Schema Others can be registered

Context Object Referent (the resource – required entity) Context provided by 5 additional entities Requester (user or machine service) Referrer (SID) Referring Entity (citing work) Resolver (base URL) Service Type (e.g. full-text)

Portal Directions Content Indexing Other Portals Integration New publishers, more backfiles, new formats Indexing Full-text indexing and indexing article components Other Portals Subject, institutional, personal Integration Courseware, research tools, office applications, browser toolbars
