Scholars Portal Update UTL Reference Services Committee June 2004
Project Goals Support research, teaching, and learning Provide Ontario researchers with access to important digital resources (current and historic) covering all disciplines Make access easier by reducing the number of interfaces researchers must learn Enable researchers to explore relationships between digital objects Foster end-user rather than mediated access Make content available in environments where it is used Provide researchers with tools to allow them to manage content more effectively
Project “Philosophy” Ownership rather than access whenever possible Cooperate if we find we are doing the same things, and then specialize Central resource and technology management, but local branding and delivery of services

OpenURL Terminology Syntax Source Target Resolver Knowledge Base Method of encoding bibliographic data in a URL Source A database or service that can generate an OpenURL from a citation (not all database vendors can do this yet) Target A database or service that can deliver the document described by an OpenURL Resolver A service that maps an OpenURL to a Target specific URL Knowledge Base A database of library holdings and linking rules that localize and contextualize links

Knowledge Base Used to normalize, enhance, and contextualize metadata provided by the link source: The reference might not include an ISSN, yet the target link to the publisher requires it abbreviated titles or author names in the citation CrossRef, PubMed lookups De-hyphenating ISSNs Library holdings and appropriate copy (different than DOI’s)

SFX and OCUL OCUL has negotiated a license for SFX from Ex Libris 1 Shared Instance The license allows us to run a common resolver containing information about shared holdings 20 Site Instances Local resolvers will hold information about institutional resources and allow for local management and local branding
Implementation Strategy Provide the tools and training to support local implementation efforts Identify areas where we can share information and efforts (e.g. documentation, source and target testing, interface design)
Implementation People Local implementation team (e-resource management, information services, systems) Site contact (liaison) OCUL Advisory Group (focus on consortia, facilitate information sharing, sort out priorities) Scholars Portal Project Staff (hardware and software installation, coordinate training, help desk support, programming) SFX Implementation Specialist (trainer and guide)
Local Implementation Tasks Training (first two weeks of July – tentative) Data preparation (for batch activation of targets) Service selection Interface customization Testing Source activation End-user instruction Statistics and evaluation
