Coordinate Adjectives

Review What is an adjective? a descriptive word that modifies a noun or a pronoun Finn is a sweet dog. Sweet = adjective Finn/dog = noun This novel is both engaging and thrilling. Engaging/thrilling = adjectives Novel = noun

Coordinate Adjectives Coordinate adjectives are adjectives that could be joined by AND because they describe the noun separately Coordinate adjectives can appear in any order without affecting the meaning. Use a comma between coordinate adjectives NOT joined by “AND” She was warm and friendly and kind. When not joined by “AND”, use a comma She was a warm, friendly, kind woman.

How can you determine a coordinate adjective? Does the sentence make sense if “and” is added between the adjectives? Does the sentence make sense if the adjectives are reversed? If the answer is “yes” to these questions, then they are coordinating adjectives.

Examples He was a sweet, helpful child. He was a sweet and helpful child OR He was a helpful, sweet child. They live in an old brick house. They live in an old and brick house OR They live in a brick old house. Coordinate adjectives NOT coordinate adjectives – the sentence sounds awkward

Practice We went down the long dirt road. The quiet respectful class listened to the guest speaker. The mighty winter storm howled through the night. They liked the fun surprise party. The choir sang a happy merry song. NO YES – The quiet, respectful class listened to the guest speaker. NO NO YES The choir sang a happy, merry song.
