Faith, Reentry, Chaplains & the ACA Min. David Street  National Director of Faith Initiatives and African American Engagement Enroll America

LEARN WAYS THAT YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Session Goals Why reentry is important and how the ACA impacts it. Gain an understanding of the outreach tools the church can utilize to maximize ACA Outreach and enrollment Develop next steps for effectively engaging with target populations in your communities LEARN WAYS THAT YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

OE3 Recap It’s particularly exciting to see the continued growth of new enrollees through HealthCare.gov. More Enrolled. From 11.7 in OE2 to 12.7 in OE3. More New People Enrolled. 4 million new people enrolled in HC.gov states in OE3. More Actively Renewing. Of the 5.6 million OE3 reenrollees through HC.gov, 70% actively shopped for a new plan. Acted earlier. A larger proportion of new enrollees through HC.gov got covered before the December deadline (63 percent in OE3 vs. 40 percent in OE2).

Your Challenge…

REENTRY: How Many People Are We Talking About? The number of prisoners held by state and federal correctional authorities on December 31, 2014 was 1,561,500 516,900 were black males which accounted for 37% of the male prison population 453,500 were white males which made up 32% of the male prison population 308,700 were Hispanic making up 22% of the male prison population inmates or 22% Imprisonment rates for black males were 3.8 to 10.5 times greater at each age group than white males.

Chronic Health Conditions About 40% of men and nearly 60% of women in jail have at least one chronic health condition Diabetes Hypertension Tuberculosis AIDs hepatitis C traumatic brain injury While some of these health conditions may be treated in the facility its important for treatment to continue upon release

Healthcare as a Tool for Re-integration Status Quo: People with untreated conditions can be a burden to their community and families Commit crimes against people and property Divert money to illicit industries Destabilize communities Sporadically employed, unable to consistently provide for family Now: Healthcare as a tool to successful re-integration Component of citizenship Restorative Easier to maintain employment if healthy. Can more reliably provide for family and participate in family

Chaplains & Seminaries A chaplain is a minister who works in a hospital, prison, university, or military unit. Seminaries serve as the training ground for people seeking to serve as faith leaders in some formal capacity. By partnering with seminarians and the actual seminaries, your organization can build a network to expand work in the health, re-entry, and faith spaces.

Medicaid Expansion as of March 2016
