Solving Equations Objective: Students will be able to solve and explain a process when solve different levels of equations.

Operations and Undoing them Each operation we have there is another that can undo that operation Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction Squaring and Square rooting What does solving an equation me? Get the variable by itself, find the value that when substituted into the equation makes it a true statement

One step Explain in words what a one step equation is and then how you would solve it Only one operation being applied to the variable Do the opposite of the operation to get variable by itself

Example Solve and explain your process

2 step What does this mean? You have 2 operations being done to a variable, usually addition or subtraction and multiplication or division Can you explain the process? What do you notice about the process in regards to other things we have learned? PEMDAS backwards

Example Solve and explain the process

Equations with ( ) What is different with these equations in respects to the first ones we discuss? You need to distribute first Then combine like terms Then it is just like the first two processes

Example Solve and explain

Variable on both sides How is this different? Need to get variables to one side of equation by addition or subtraction, opposite of what is happening Doesn’t matter what side Then process is the same

Example Solve and explain

Complex Equations Multi step Parenthesis and variables on both sides Combine steps and ideas to solve Fractions Get rid of fractions Find LCD Multiply the entire equation by LCD to get rid of all the fractions, now it is just a multi step process

Examples Solve and Explain

Only variables What if there are not numbers or limited numbers in the problem? Treat it like all the others trying to get that one variable by itself by doing the opposite of the operations given

Example Solve for indicated variable, explain the process

Objective: Students will be able to solve and explain a process when solve different levels of equations. On a scale of 1 to 4 Do you feel we meet the objective for the day. If we did not meet the objective, what did we miss and how could I improve.
