Linear Equations in One Variable 4.2 Notes Linear Equations in One Variable

Warm-up Solve for the indicated variable. Solve for x. Solve for b.

Things to consider When solving equations think about the following… You may need to simplify (distribute, combine like terms, etc…) each side of the equation first. The goal is to get a variable by itself on one side using inverse operations (PEMDAS in reverse). Algebraic equations need to be BALANCED  whatever you do to one side, you must do to another. Solve: 3(x – 2) – x = –5x – 4(2 – x).

More examples… 2(x + 4) = 5x – 12 –6[u – 4(u + 2)] = 5u – 4

Example w/Fractions. How do you get fractions to go away? Solve and check.

No Solution or Infinitely Many Solutions 1) 2)

Last one Solve and check: 2R – 2(R + 3) = 4[2R – 3(1 + R)]
