Presentation transcript:

1/10/17: BR – 1. Identify one problem in our world/community and a policy that came up to address it. 2.Think about the different ways that people can participate and advocate for changes in policy. What characteristics do you think a person needs to be effective in advocating (speaking out) for change. Today: Who has the power to influence, make and change policy? How can I participate in creating and changing public policy?

Unit 3 Essential Questions What is the power of public policy? Who has power to influence, make, and change public policy? How will you participate in creating and changing public policy.

Petition Closure: (Hand In!) What are 4 characteristics of a good petition? Can you describe the commonalities between effective petitions and effective letters? Extension – Try to write your own petition or letter. Hand this in with the two handouts!

Effective Advocates Thoroughly understand the problem and the possible policy solutions, as well as the perspectives of people and groups who might support or oppose their ideas. Today you will begin to understand the process of becoming an effective advocate Pick up the process packet. Take a look at the Policy Problem. We can use this problem or select another

Vocabulary Journal Pros Cons Opponents Supporters Direct action

What to do? Complete Step 1 (you may need to do some research) Understand the difference between public policy and direct action (the problem of litter for example) Complete steps 2 and 3 For each group: Prepare a skit that shows at least 2 supporters and 2 opponents for the policy suggested. One of the supporters should be the policy maker who has proposed the new policy and should begin the skit by saying something like, “ I am here to ask for your support of this new policy that I am sponsoring..”
