Planning for College

What are the NC choices? 36 Private/Independent 17 Public 58 Community Colleges

Where are they? North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Small Campuses. BIG IMPACT. Lets begin by viewing the map. Most of you probably know that our campuses are geographically spread out across North Carolina. The map helps provide a visual representation of our presence in the state as well as underscore the large number of private colleges in North Carolina. NCICU is comprised of 36 colleges and universities. With more options for private higher education in North Carolina than most states, students have a number of choices from which to choose. Although there is variety among our institutions such as all women’s colleges, historically black colleges and universities, and religious affiliated institutions, you also find some common elements such as size and academics. Our campuses are generally small. Several campuses have less than 1,000 enrolled. The largest undergraduate enrollment is 6,000 students; all are regionally and nationally accredited. Also let me point out that one our campuses has undergone a major change this year. Peace College is now William Peace University and is now co-educational.

well below the national average. Cost The average tuition and fees at NC’s independent colleges and universities is $25,596 which is well below the national average. NCICU 2014 Data The state of NC is highly touted for its commitment to providing educational opportunities at reasonable costs. That commitment is also evident in the cost of attending a private college or university in NC. Our campuses strive to keep costs affordable to encourage access to postsecondary education.

Did you know? Institutional aid is a major component of awards programs at private colleges and universities. Independent colleges and universities in North Carolina provided more than $613 million in institutional aid in 2014-2015, More than 90% of the students on some campuses receive financial aid. North Carolina students at independent colleges and universities receive more than $84.4 million in need-based financial aid from the state. 50% of NC students at NCICU campuses receive federal Pell Grants. NCICU Data Despite the myth that private colleges are for wealthy students, many of our campuses have large numbers of students who receive financial aid. In some cases, up to 90% of students at some of NCICU member institutions receive aid. The gap between what student families can pay and the cost of attending the institution is met through loans, scholarships, grants, work study, etc. Our campuses work diligently to attract and keep our students by offering them the academic, emotional, social and financial support they need. Awards packages at public and private institutions can vary greatly because of the level of institutional aid packages.
