Innovation in the life sciences: twelve years of research from Innogen David Wield

Strategic Vision 2007-12 (Precis) ‘Innogen will produce theoretically and empirically grounded research that advances the knowledge base in social sciences and delivers a sound evidence base for decision-making about life science-based technologies, focusing on the evolution of the new life-science economy and on the governance of innovation in the life sciences’

The Innogen triangle: systemic analysis Policy makers and government: respond to new products and processes from industry licence and regulate products and processes, set standards and penalties respond to public interests and concerns balance industry/public interests Innovation communities: generate new ideas, processes and products satisfy customers generate profits generate risks and costs to themselves and others (policy and public communities) Members of the public and stakeholder groups: exert political influence beneficiaries of new products and processes selective bearers of some risks motivations often based on values and ideology, rather than self interest

Innogen second phase The new life science economy A: New life sciences and innovation B: Globalisation: access; inclusion and capabilities Governance of innovation in the life sciences C: Governance and regulation D: Conceptualising engagement

Innogen’s Global Collaborations We work in and with over 30 countries.

Final Evaluation by ESRC said: ‘Innogen’s comprehensive, coherent and unified programme of policy-oriented research with an important international dimension and an emphasis on genuinely interdisciplinary working demonstrates the Centre’s success’ ‘The Centre was highly successful in carrying out research with the key actors and not just studying them’ ‘Innogen consciously sought to bridge the natural and social sciences’

ESRC said (cont.): ‘Although priorities shifted during the life of the centre due to new emerging technologies, the centre reacted well, evolving where necessary’ ‘A large number of early career researchers have gone on to more senior positions … . The funding model (50% positions) facilitated development of a large cohort of researchers’ A large group of senior researchers has emerged.

Thanks to Innogen researchers for research results and to UK ESRC for financial support
