Work skills 2018 Work Skills Drop Down Days – Wednesday 4 July – Friday 6 July 2018 Voluntary Work Experience Placement – Mon 9 July – Fri 13 July 2018 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3: 23-25

Work skills 2018 Work skills Drop Down Days (3) Work experience In school Employability skills CV writing Mock Interviews Guest speakers Interactive sessions Trips to Universities/colleges Work experience Week out of school 5 day work placement with an employer

Why do work experience? An opportunity to find out what a particular job/industry is like. Helps to develop your self confidence and communication skills with people of all ages. Allows you to find out what skills are needed in the workplace. Gives you the opportunity to shine on your CV – it’s a competitive market out there. Helps you to think about what opportunities are available to you after you finish your education.

Key timeline Autumn term 1 Search and contact potential placements* Voluntary Work Experience It is your job to find the placement. Those that do not have a placement will spend the week in school going to normal lessons. Autumn term 1 Search and contact potential placements* Autumn term 2 Settle on and secure a placement then pass on contact details to school. Summer term 1 Contact the placement again to reconfirm and make final preparations Summer term 2 Attend the placement

How to choose the right one? SUITABLE Can you get there? Is it safe? Will there be people available to help you/talk to you/give you feedback? WORTHWHILE What do you want to gain from your week? Will this placement allow you to do that? Will you be able to get involved in some tasks or is it just observation?

So what now? What we will do: Give you information on where to start looking. Help you with any questions. Check the placement you have chosen is safe. What we won’t do: Find and contact your placement for you! What you will do: Find and contact placements If they agree to take you, get contact details to pass on to school Arrange when you need to be there, what you need to wear, what you will be doing Attend, fill in your log book and be a great ambassador for our school Learn from it Enjoy it!

Work experience placement dates 9 July – 13 July 2018 Once you have found a placement, contacted them and they have agreed to these dates, you need to complete a preference form. Fill this in and then return it to Student Services.

Remember… All experience is useful Even if it isn’t directly related to what you may be interested in doing in the future, you will learn a great deal. Many workplace environments require the same sets of general skills, and any experience can serve to demonstrate responsibility, competence and commitment. Enjoy it! It is a great opportunity to give you an insight in to the world of work while having the time to take it all in. Take advantage of not having full responsibility to develop your understanding.
