Creating Possibilities Conference: Inspiring Creative Minds The Rights of People with Cognitive Disabilities to Technology and Information Access Real World Impacts To catalyze and integrate advances in science, engineering, and technology and promote the quality of life and independent living of people with cognitive disabilities. Genevieve Berry Creating Possibilities Conference: Inspiring Creative Minds May 26th, 2016 Rapid City, SD

Overview Real World Impacts Declaration Implementation Grants – DIGS #TechAccess4All Campaign Available Resources Q & A “People with and without disabilities should have access to the normal routines and rhythms of American culture.” – Jim Conroy Has everyone in the room signed the Declaration?

Real World Impact - Understand “I was lucky to have been born in the computer age. Without them, my life would have been miserable and my scientific career impossible.” – Dr. Stephen Hawking The work we do or do not do has real world consequences – all the time – we need to understand that! Q – Thoughts about this? Does anyone here have a similar example or story they’d like to share? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life . . . the children; those who are in the twilight of life . . . the elderly; and those who are in the shadow of life . . . the sick . . . the needy . . . and the disabled." - Hubert H. Humphrey "New information and communications technologies can improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, but only if such technologies are designed from the beginning so that everyone can use them. Given the explosive growth in the use of the World Wide Web for publishing, electronic commerce, lifelong learning and the delivery of government services, it is vital that the Web be accessible to everyone." - Bill Clinton

Real World Impact - Ask www.google.org/impactchallenge/disabilities/ Finding the right answers starts with asking the right questions ….. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life . . . the children; those who are in the twilight of life . . . the elderly; and those who are in the shadow of life . . . the sick . . . the needy . . . and the disabled." - Hubert H. Real World Impact - Possibilities We ask the questions in order to begin to consider the possibilities of doing life in new and innovative ways. Q - What are some of the questions you would like to ask? What are some of the changes that you would like to see brought about by technology?

Real World Impact - Foundations Inclusion is the norm, not the exception. Applied Cognitive Technology – extends the foundational efforts established by AT (while still allowing for that niche market). Technology levels the playing field and is the best tool for ensuring self-determination and quality of life. In order to achieve a “real world impact” we have to operate from strong foundations

Declaration Implementation Grants (DIGS) 5 Awards @ $10,000.00 each. Proposals focused on promoting and furthering the Declaration thru: Advocacy, Education, and Legislation. Anticipate DIGS will be awarded on an annual basis. The DIGS are The Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities first formalized effort to raise awareness for the Declaration and push for legislation in all 50 states.

“Technology in the Heartland: Ensuring Iowans experiencing disability are not left behind” Iowa Association Community Providers “Networking and Education for Declaration Adoption” Arc of Westchester “You, Me, and Technology: Spreading the Word” YAI “Digital Media Arts Education Lab” The Arc of the Capital Area “Advancing and Promoting the Rights of People with Cognitive Disabilities to Technology and Information Access in Philadelphia” The Arc of Philadelphia 2016 DIGS Recipients – The proposals cover the gamut from education, advocacy, legislation and next level skills acquisition. #TechAccess4All Campaign The first dedicated “grassroots, guerilla marketing campaign” to raise awareness of the Declaration while extending ownership. Ideas?

EXAMPLES OF THE 563 ENDORSING ORGANIZATIONS IN THE U.S. All of these organizations have formally endorsed the Declaration – none of them promote the Declaration on their websites.

Available Resources Declaration Implementation Materials @ www.colemaninstitute.org/declaration Inclusion Article To be developed – input?

Brainstorm Thoughts about the Declaration Ideas on how to promote / establish platform “People with and without disabilities should have access to the normal routines and rhythms of American culture.” – Jim Conroy The Declaration is a tool that communities can effectively use to implement change. It functions as a change agent. It puts communities in the driver’s seat, if that’s what they want. Anne Lamott quote: “Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.” – promotes possibilities.
