Definition of chemistry Chemistry is the study of the nature, properties, and composition of matter, and how these undergo changes.
What Is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of the composition of “matter” – (matter is anything with mass and occupies space), its properties, and the changes.

Presentation transcript:

Chemistry: What is Chemistry? The science or the study of Matter and how matter changes. It is a close investigation of the atoms and molecules. Composition – What are things made of (atoms and molecules) Structure – The arrangement of particles (atomic structure) Properties – Unique characteristics (physical and chemical) Reactions – Interactions (products vs reactants)

Famous Chemists Alfred Nobel – dynamite …the “Nobel” prize 2. Marie Curie – radioactivity, radium & polonium 3. Louis Pasteur – pasteurization (removing harmful microorganisms), Vaccines (microbiology) John Dalton – atomic theory, the modern model of an atom

Why study Chemistry? What careers require you to be a Chemist? Cleaning Products – Laundry soap, detergents (antibacterial agents) Cooking – Baking is a science, combining ingredients ICE CREAM! Perfume – Producing different scents Fireworks – Explosions with color and patterns Medicine – Antibiotics and Vaccines Environmentalist – Harmful Chemicals/how to clean up the environment *Studying Science will make you analytical and proficient in problem solving, which is needed in everything you do!

Matter is made up of Atoms and Molecules Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space List three examples of matter in the classroom: 1. 2. 3. Matter is made up of Atoms and Molecules

A substance is a single kind of matter that is pure, which means a substance has a specific composition or makeup Example: Water (H20) Water is a substance. Water is pure. It doesn’t matter if water comes from a glacier or a geyser. The composition is always H20. Water can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas and it will always be H20.

Properties used to identify and classify matter. Physical Property : characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into a different substance 2. Chemical Property : the ability to change into a different substance

Workbook Examples: Physical Properties Chemical Properties
