The Online Education Initiative: Believe in Access, Redesign the Systems, and Shift the Culture John Freitas, Los Angeles City College Pat James, OEI Executive Director ASCCC Spring Plenary Session April 21, 2016

OEI Goals Significantly increase CCC student transfer to 4-year institutions; Increase student completion by system collaboration in providing access to quality online courses and support services for students, faculty, and colleges; Create economies of scale in resource and technology acquisition ($8,000,000 yearly savings on CMS infrastructure alone).

Completion by…. Keeping students in the seats we have. ----- Prepared students ----- Prepared faculty ----- Quality course design and content resources Providing resources to colleges to allow for the addition of quality online courses Providing students with opportunities to take classes when and where they need them

There are three levels of opportunity for participation in the OEI. More about Canvas later….. Myth busting: add that courses don’t have to be reviewed to go to canvas only for the exchange.

% of Colleges Participating as of March 2016 65 colleges submitted application 47 with IPA Signed

OEI Purchase of Canvas 65 colleges have submitted applications 47 are in migration progress Some important items to note OEI is currently paying 100% cost until 2018-19 when it will either continue at 100% or drop to OEI paying 2/3 of the cost via ongoing grant funding. If OEI pays, colleges may choose to have more than one CMS only if they pay the OEI contracted price for Canvas, otherwise colleges have some migration time but must use Canvas as sole CMS. 24/7 Help desk for Canvas is included Migration resources are available. Faculty Resources are available, too. Click on the logo to visit the implementation web pages Do we need a list of the 47? The implementation guide is linked at the CMS type.

Quick description of the governance structure and then discuss the consortium

In Addition! OEI Consortium Purpose: Advisory and working body to allow the 24 pilot colleges to help shape the implementation of OEI components at pilot colleges and beyond.

Online Learner Readiness Students : In total, an estimated 5,900 students in the pilot colleges have had access to Online Learner Readiness and/or Online Tutoring resources starting with the first pilots in Spring 2015. Based on Google Analytics, these resources have attracted 26,929 sessions, 17,364 users, and 56,855 page views. 91% of these users reside in California.

Online Tutoring Resource Under a system-wide licensing agreement made available in March 2015, 28 colleges are using the Online Tutoring Platform (WWWB) to help manage access to local tutoring of which 15 of the WWWB license holders are non-pilot colleges. Overall, total of 39 CCCs have either NetTutor and/or WWWB licenses.
