Finding the Average An average can be found for a set or group of numbers. Example: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 28miles 34 miles 29 miles 39 miles 35 miles What is the average miles driven a day this week?
Finding Average . . . Step 1 Add all numbers together to get a sum. 28miles+34 miles+29 miles+39 miles+35 miles = 165 miles Step 2 Divide the sum by the number of quantities added together 165 miles -:- 5(days) = 33 miles/day Average
Review Steps To find an average of a group of numbers: Lets say these are grades for a class. 85, 72, 84, 75, 84, 80 1st add all numbers together 85 + 72 + 84 + 75 + 84 + 80 = 480 1 2 3 4 5 6 2nd Divide the sum by the quantity of numbers 480 -:- 6 = 80 Average
Writing Averages Averages are often written as whole numbers A football player catches the following number of passes during 8 games 6 8 5 9 4 7 6 7 1st Add: 6 + 8 + 5 + 9 + 3 + 7 + 6 + 7 = 52 2nd Divide:52 -:- 8 = 6.5 round to a whole number Average = 7 carries a game
