Math Work Stations K - 5

Resource Math Work Stations: Independent Learning You Can Count On, K-2 by Debbie Diller

WHAT is a Math Work Station? A place for independent work Used to reinforce skills/concepts already taught Integral part of each student’s math learning Something all students should participate in

WHAT a Math Work Station is NOT: A place where students can go when they have “finished their work” A place to learn new concepts, skills, or vocabulary Changed weekly Worksheets

WHEN do I use Math Work Stations? Varies depending on your class and your students Weekly Some days may not have work station time Try for 3 to 4 days a week Maintain a routine

Math Block A: Math Block B: 9:00-9:30 30 Minutes whole group 9:30-9:45 Work stations rotation 1 9:45-10:00 Work stations rotation 2 Math Block B: Group A Group B Group C 9:00-9:20 Teacher Rotation 1 9:20-9:40 Rotation 2 9:40-10:00

WHY should I use Math Work Stations? Reviews mathematical concepts Engages students mathematically Provides time for teacher observation Provides time for small group instruction

HOW do I organize? SORT through your materials Four Step Process: SORT through your materials Set aside a specific time Lay out all your materials PURGE Hard to do Consider giving it to another teacher or the media center

HOW do I organize? 3. CONTAINERIZE Done by domain Measurement, Number Sense, Geometry, Money Done by type of manipulative Unifix cubes, Base 10 blocks, dice 4. MAINTAIN the storage system (different than workstation) Get students to help

Manipulatives to look for: Attribute blocks Dominos Base Ten Blocks Measurement containers

HOW do I organize Math Work Stations? First think about what concepts/skills you are teaching, then plan a workstation to fit Not the other way around Use what you have!

HOW do I organize Math Work Stations? Use numbered bins or totes Place in a central location

HOW do I organize Math Work Stations?

HOW do I organize Math Work Stations?

HOW do I organize Math Work Stations?

Discussion Question If you are already using literacy work stations, what parallels do you see between literacy work stations and math work stations?

HOW do I run Math Work Stations? Students are in assigned pairs or groups of three Multiple ways to plan the groupings Can use same procedure that you use for Literacy Work Stations

HOW do I run Math Work Stations? I CAN sheets

HOW do I manage Math Work Stations?

WHAT do I have that I can use in a Math Work Station? Brainstorming activity - Kagan jot thoughts

How can you assess using Math Work Stations? Teacher notes Storyboards Math Journals Recording Sheets

Questions?
