Things to keep in mind when writing: Strong organization of information is important – use a graphic organizer! Each paragraph brings the reader deeper into the subject by providing new information. An expository essay has a specific formula as to what should appear in each paragraph.
1st Paragraph (Introduction) Begins with a good hook to draw your reader in. States the topic. Provides a preview of the three body paragraphs. Concludes with a transition sentence that leads into the next paragraph.
2nd, 3rd, 4th Paragraphs (Body) Each paragraph has its own topic related to the main idea of the essay. Use 1 or 2 pieces of text-based evidence to support your topic– do not repeat yourself. Each paragraph needs introductory and concluding sentences.
5th Paragraph (Closing) Restate your topic from the introduction, but in DIFFERENT WORDS. Summarize the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs. End with a “zinger” that makes the reader think or smile.
