What is Empathy map? An Empathy map is a way to organize user data and prepare discussion about the needs a user has. The discussion will be centered around what was observed, and what can be inferred about these user groups’ beliefs and emotion. September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

Empathy Map a tool to organize & visualize data & draw out insights Left: observations Right: inferences Say: quotes from users Do: action/behaviors from users Think: what might users be thinking? What does it tell you about his/her belief? Feel: what emotions users feel? say think An Empathy Map is one tool to help you synthesize your observations and draw out unexpected insights. On The Left are observations and on the right on inferences Use your notes, audio, & video from your fieldwork to fill out the 4 quadrants SAY: What are some quotes and defining words your user said? DO: What actions and behaviors did you notice? THINK: What might your user be thinking? What does this tell you about his or her beliefs? FEEL: What emotions might your subject be feeling? do feel September 29, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

What is POV Want-Ad A creative way for designers to synthesize all of the needs and insights that they discovered during the empathy phase into an actionable problem statement. To write a Want-AD that accurately depicts the challenge that they are trying to address for their user. September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Adjectives to describe the most pertinent characteristics of your user September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Verbs to describe the most important Needs of your users September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Extract the most meaningful Insights from your user September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Descriptive characterization of a user September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Followed by “seeks” to meet an implied need September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a POV Want-Ad? Plus additional flavor to capture your findings September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

borderline personality Drug addict user a way to stay sober because he/she can't manage his/her life predictably stay sober People with borderline personality mental support because nobody care about him/her… lack of social support, difficult to self-manage September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

POV Want-Ad exercise Build a POV Want-AD based on the empathy map you just created (team work for 15 min) - Characterize User (5 min) - Insights/Needs (5 min) - Write Want Ads (5 min) September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

Studio: Define Exercises Empathy map (40 min) POV Want-AD (20 min) 2x2 Matrix (20 min) September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

What is 2x2 Matrix & Why? A 2x2 matrix is another way to help designers organize & sort ideas based on x-y spectrums. Placing your ideas visually lead to insights & clarify. Placing your ideas help you think about relationships between ideas. September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

How to use a 2x2 Matrix? Items can be any group of things that would be useful to explore: products, objects, ideas, people, quotes, … Select two x-y spectra Place items on quadrants See if your selection of spectra is meaningful & informative If not, change your spectra & iterate One common use is competitive landscape See what quadrants are very full or empty September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation
