“What? Is that it?!” Two bright sparks have a cunning plan… “Primary Care Oncology? Lets define it for them!”

The cunning plan! Wales-wide, recruiting GPs and nurses who would support and develop primary care clinicians to deliver good cancer care Work with secondary care to integrate services and promote good communication and co-working Develop a community of practice that could share good practice and innovation, adopting a ‘once for Wales’ approach

So what happened next? INFLUENCING Our ‘bright sparks’ need to convince others this is a good idea

Act 2 Making it happen…

Engagement Discussion with…Medical Directors, Assoc. Medical Directors for Primary Care, Directors of Nursing, Directors of Planning, Directors of Primary and Community Care, Cancer Leads, Meeting with Minister for Health and Social Care… (phew!) Memorandum of Understanding and Agreement signed between Macmillan, Chair of Wales Cancer Implementation Group and Cancer Network Letters of support received from all Health Boards/Velindre CEOs Launch event June 2015

Where are we now? We now have a team of 7 GPs and 4 Nurses working across Wales We are supporting the set up of a Rapid Diagnosis Centre We are participating in the Bevan Foundation ‘Exemplar’ programme Leading pilot projects funded by the Welsh Govt Innovation Fund Designed a Cancer National Clinical Priority that has been included in the 2017-18 GP contract Whole team contributed to the re-fresh of the cancer delivery plan Nursing team supporting practice nurses and developing projects Commissioned evaluation of phase 1 (including baseline and scoping)

What we learnt … Recruitment is challenging (8 different HR departments and operational structures) Executive Level support doesn’t automatically translate into active support from operational teams Make yourself visible Make yourself useful Recruitment always takes longer than you think Suitable candidates won’t always “appear” – sometimes you have to “chase” a star signing Be adaptable Critical friends are vital Come up and see me some time…and I may consider Macmillan Framework for Primary Care!

Is it fixed yet? Was it broken in the first place? GPs sometimes seen as part of the problem Primary Care now part of the solution Move from “running repairs” to “annual service and maintenance”
