Universal Design Workshop Wednesday 29th November 2006 Universal Design Workshop Group B Electronic Access

ELECTRONIC ACCESS “It’s OK, it’s all available on the Web.” Access to education and training is increasingly dependant upon access to computer technology and digital communication.  This Workshop will explore the opportunities and limitations of the new technologies including: accessible web design learning management systems (e.g. WebCT, Blackboard etc.) assistive technology and computer access real time transcription and digital recording systems (e.g. I Lecture)

“Integrating Assistive Technology into the Standard Student Computer Image” Trevor Allan

Integrated AT Project Trevor Allan, Manager, DSU

Integrated AT Project Brief History 1999 – 2001: DSU supplies, maintains & upgrades AT Hardware & Software – stand alone machines. No access to other student software 2001 – 2002: Division of Information (DOI) takes over supply of Hardware – still stand alone, Internet, Email access 2002 – 2005 DOI Hardware, DSU Software – separate DSU Image on 8 machines – access to regular student software 2002 – Networked Voice Files (Local Server) 2004 – Networked Voice Files (Mainframe) 2006 AT software fully integrated into Standard Student PC Image – available across all PCs on campus (including Halls of Residence)

Integrated AT Project Advantages: Inclusive Practice/Universal Access Principles Efficiency Improved Network installation Enhanced access for students Improved access to AT for exams Timely and wider access to AT Same access to all other programs on student image

Integrated AT Project Disadvantages: Not able to add or upgrade software outside regular programmed updates (each semester) Need to test compatibility with other software More rigid control over access, functions, etc. Need to obtain Multi-user network licences, Corporate Install Key (Dragon) or key server (potentially more expensive than SULs)

Integrated AT Project Software Currently Installed: JAWS 7 (5 User Network Licence) Zoomtext 8.1 (5 User Network Licence) Kurzweill 3000 (5 User Network Licence) Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.0 (5 Licence CIS) textAloud 2.0 (3 Licence Key Server) Inspiration (on Main Menu) (Site Licence)
