From Safari by Robert Bateman Elephant Elephants like to forage in forests where they can eat juicy young leaves and twigs from the treetops. You can hear them breaking off branches and munching. You can even hear the rumbling of their stomachs. Find a word that means “looking or searching for food”. 2. Find a more interesting word for “eating”. 3. How do we know when elephants are hungry?

Because elephants are the largest land animals, they need to eat constantly. So an elephant herd is always on the move, looking for its next meal. A herd can travel as far as 40 miles (64km) in one night. 4. Find a word that means “a group of elephants”.

No wonder elephants love to stop and cool down when they find water. In the heat of an African afternoon, one of the best places to look for elephants is at a watering hole or a river. 5. On which continent do the elephants in this selection live?

Habitat: Forest, grasslands, river valleys Height: Up to 14 feet (4 metres) Weight: 7,000-13,500 lb (3,000-6,250 kg) Food: Vegetation, including fruit, leaves, bark, grass Range: Southern, central and eastern Africa 6. Which word tells us that they eat plants? 7. Which word tells us that they eat part of a tree?

The leader of an elephant herd is always the oldest female, known as the matriarch. She remembers where the deepest water holes are and knows the best places to find food. 8. Find a word that means “female leader”.

The face of one of these wise, old female elephants makes me think of a map. The creases and wrinkles are like the mountains and rivers. The flat places are the wide plains. 9. Which two words tell us that the female elephant looks old?

Young male elephants do not live with the females and calves. Instead, they roam together in small groups. Sometimes they test their strength by fighting with each other. 10. Find a verb that means “to go to places without having a plan”.

Quiz Answers: Round 1 1. forage 2. munching 3. It says you can hear their stomachs rumbling. 4. “Herd” means a group of elephants 5. They live in Africa. 6. vegetation 7. “Bark” – It is the ‘skin’ of a tree. 8. matriarch 9. creases and wrinkles 10. roam
