Landforms

Unit Standards 5.E.3A.1 Construct how different landforms and surface features result from the location and movement of water on Earth’s surface through watersheds (drainage basins) and rivers. 5.E.3A.2 Develop and use models to describe and compare characteristics and locations of the landforms on continents with those on the ocean floor (including the continental self and slope, the mid ocean ridge, the rift zone, the trench, and the abyssal plain). 5.E.3B.1 Analyze and interpret data to describe and predict how natural processes (such as weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, or storms) affect Earth’s surface.

What are Earth’s Layers? Atmosphere- the air around the earth; It includes all of the gases around the Earth.

What are Earth’s Layers? Hydrosphere- all of the Earth’s liquid and solid water, including oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and ice caps.

What are Earth’s Layers? The hydrosphere covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface.

What are Earth’s Layers? Crust- the rocky surface layer of Earth. It includes the continents and the Ocean basins.

What are Earth’s Layers? Mantle- the layer of Earth’s interior below the crust.

What are Earth’s Layers? The mantle is divided into the upper and lower mantle. The top of the upper mantle is solid rock.

What are Earth’s Layers? Lithosphere- the crust and the top of the upper mantle

What are Earth’s Layers? The lower mantle is solid rock. Below the lower mantle is the core or the central part of the Earth.

What are Earth’s Layers? Outer Core- is made of liquid metals

What are Earth’s Layers? Inner core- is made of solid metals

What are Earth’s Layers? Earth’s biosphere- is the parts of earth where living things are found. Organisms have been found from the lower atmosphere to the ocean floor.
