Drops Versus Withdrawals Robert Kwong, M.S. Academic Advisor College of Liberal Arts and Sciences University of Florida

What is a “drop”? (after the drop/add period) Dropping a class or course generally means that you no longer wish to continue or complete a course you are registered in a current semester. The term “drop” is used when you are enrolled in a term that has at least 2 or more courses on the schedule. The student will still have other courses remaining in the current term.

What is a “withdrawal”? (after the drop/add period) Withdrawing is a term that is used when a student is not able to or no longer wants to continue in school for the current semester. The student plans to drop the entire schedule in the current term. If a student is enrolled in only one course in a term, and the student wishes no longer to continue, it is a full-term withdrawal, not a drop. Since it is only one class in the term, the entire semester is withdrawn as there are no other courses remaining in the schedule.

What is the UF drop policy for Transfer Students. https://catalog. ufl Transfer students are allowed two drops the entire time of attendance at UF, without requiring approval. Students that drop a science courses that have a lecture and corresponding lab section within the same term would be considered as having used one drop. If a student withdraws from a term that had only one course it is not considered a drop. All additional drops must be approved by College petition. Additional drops can be considered for extenuating circumstances. Students must place a request to drop a course by the published deadline for each term via Student Self Service >>> Registration >>> Request to Drop a Course

University of Florida Drop Policy A grade of “W” will appear on the UF transcript. UF GPA will not be affected. You are still held fee liable for the course. No refund Possible repayment of some forms of financial aid is possible. Bright Futures Please see someone at the Student Financial Affairs Office before finalizing your decision to drop a class. (Criser Hall S-107) http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/contact-sfa/

Things to Consider for Dropping Courses If the course dropped is required for a major, it counts as an unsuccessful attempt. CLAS requires all courses for your major be completed successfully within 2 attempts in order to remain in the major. If you are under the State of Florida Excess Hours Surcharge legislation, then the drop will count towards the hours accumulated towards your excess hours limit. Excess hours is based on credits attempted, not credit hours earned. The course you drop might also be a required critical tracking course, and/or also count towards critical tracking GPA. See an Academic Advisor if Farrior Hall to see if dropping the course will impact critical tracking.

What if my course drop is due to medically related circumstances? You must drop the course via Student Self Service by the published drop deadline. The next step is to petition the Medical Petitions Committee at the Dean of Students Office to review your case. If approved by the medical petitions committee: Attempts will not count. Credits are generally exempt from Excess Hours Surcharge credit hour limit. A refund will be given for the course if the petition is submitted within 6 months of term you dropped the class. Please meet with a Counselor at U Matter We Care at Peabody Hall (3rd floor) https://www.dso.ufl.edu/care

What is the UF Withdrawal Policy. https://catalog. ufl Students may fully withdraw from a current semester without approval. Students must place a request to complete a Full Term Withdrawaal by the published deadline for each term via Student Self Service >>> Registration >>> Request to Withdraw from all courses for the current term.

UF Full Term Withdrawal Policy A grade of “W” will appear on the UF transcript for all courses on the current schedule. UF GPA will not be affected. You are still held fee liable for the all the courses in that semester. No refund Possible repayment of some forms of financial aid is possible. Bright Futures Please see someone at the Student Financial Affairs Office before finalizing your decision to drop a class. (Criser Hall S-107) http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/contact-sfa/

Things to Consider for Completing a Full Term Withdrawal If the the term withdrawn had any required courses for a major, it counts as an unsuccessful attempt. CLAS requires all courses for your major be completed successfully within 2 attempts in order to remain in the major. If you are under the State of Florida Excess Hours Surcharge legislation, then the credits enrolled from full term withdrawal will count towards the hours accumulated towards your excess hours limit. Excess hours is based on credits attempted, not credit hours earned. The term might have courses that are required critical tracking courses, and/or also count towards critical tracking GPA. See an Academic Advisor if Farrior Hall to see if withdrawing from the term will impact critical tracking.

What if my full-term withdrawal is due to medically related circumstances? You must withdrawal from the current semester via Student Self Service by the published withdrawal deadline. The next step is to petition the Medical Petitions Committee at the Dean of Students Office to review your case. If approved by the medical petitions committee: Attempts will not count. Credits are generally exempt from Excess Hours Surcharge credit hour limit. A refund will be given for the semester if the petition is submitted within 6 months of term yu withdrew from the semester.
