Interphase The nondividing part of the cell cycle The nuclear membrane is intact throughout interphase Split into 3 phases G1 phase, S phase, and G2 phase
G1 Phase Typically the longest phase of the entire cell cycle The cell grows and produces cell components The DNA is loosely spread out, and you can’t see individual chromosomes (chromatin form)
S Phase DNA is replicated Every DNA molecule is copied exactly, forming 2 sister chromatids that stay attached to each other
G2 Phase Cell prepares for division Makes the cytoskeleton proteins it needs to move the chromosomes around
Mitosis Division of genetic material and nucleus of the cell leading up to cell division
Prophase DNA appears as chromatin coils that pair up as they condense. Nuclear membrane disappears
Metaphase Chromatid pairs line up along the middle of the cell Centrioles form spindle fibers attaching the chromatid pairs at their centromeres
Anaphase Chromatid pairs separate and are pulled towards the cells poles by the spindle fibers
Telophase Cells get ready to divide into two by forming new nuclear membranes around the separated sets of chromosomes
Cytokinesis After mitosis ends Cytoplasm and organelles of the cell divide forming two identical cells
